Gauthier will be in Montreal for four months, starting in September, conducting research for a project entitled: “Screening Indigeneity: The National Film Board's First Nations Films 1939-2009.”

As the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in North American Society and Culture at Concordia, Gauthier’s project will examine the representations of First Nations peoples and their cultures in films made by both Native and non-Native filmmakers over the National Film Board's 70-year history, and compare the aesthetic strategies used by different filmmakers.

“It is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Dr. Jennifer Gauthier to the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright Scholars,” says Michael Hawes, executive director of Fulbright Canada. “Dr. Gauthier is extremely deserving of this award, and I have no doubt her research will offer unique and critical insight into the representations of First Nations peoples during this era of filmmaking.”

Gauthier holds a PhD of Philosophy in Cultural Studies from George Mason University, a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University, and a BA in Art History from Vassar College. She was previously a Fulbright Scholar with the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program in 2000-01, when she went from George Mason University to the National Film Board of Canada and the University of Ottawa to study Canada’s national film and cultural policies. Gauthier has been widely published in academic and peer-reviewed journals, and she has presented her research at numerous film festivals and conferences.

By engaging the brightest minds in academic exchanges, Fulbright Canada seeks to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Canada and the people of the United States. Through its bilateral academic exchanges, outstanding students, scholars and professionals strengthen Canada-U.S. relations by examining a wide range of subjects which are critical to the relationship between the two countries.
