MBA program knighted

The John Molson School of Business MBA moves up to second place in the Corporate Knights' Knight Schools sustainability survey.

Concordia University’s MBA program has been ranked second in Canada for integrating sustainability into its program. According to Corporate Knights magazine’s annual “Knight Schools Survey,” which assesses institutional support, student initiatives and curriculum, it appears that a year of hard work at the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) has made an impact.

Modelled after the Aspen Institute’s Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey in the United States, the “Knight Schools Survey” evaluates how sustainability is integrated into the Canadian business education experience. Traditionally, the survey ranked 10 ranked business schools, but for the first time this year, the rankings have grown to include 20 schools. Despite the added competitiveness, the JMSB MBA has been ranked in second place, moving up from third.

The Knights cited the exceptional external speakers that Concordia has brought in over the past year as well as the MBA’s specialities in corporate governance and business ethics; business sustainability and environmental management; and community development. Concordia students are invited to take the MBA Oath, which asks graduates to commit to creating value responsibly and ethically.

In addition, the David O’Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise, the MBA Community Service Initiative, and the John Molson Sustainable Business Group all have important internship and consulting programs in place to assist communities locally, nationally and internationally.

Student-led initiatives are also one of the many strengths of JMSB’s MBA program. Interim dean Alan Hochstein says that “social responsibility and sustainability have become synonymous with the JMSB. From the Sustainable Business Conference, to consulting services by students for local community groups and small businesses, to volunteering in Africa through the JMSB’s International Community Outreach Program and fundraising for the homeless: all of these initiatives support JMSB’s mission to ‘create responsible global citizens.’”
