It might be a bit quieter around Concordia over the summer, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing going on.

For the thousands of students taking summer classes, here is a list of opportunities and updated information that will help you take advantage of university life during the sunny season.

Starting June 10, the university begins its summer hours; most university offices will close at 1 p.m. on Fridays. This schedule will continue until August 12.

Leadership Initiative Volunteer Engagement (LIVE) Centre

The Leadership Initiative Volunteer Engagement (LIVE) Centre is the place to find out how summer volunteering can help can boost your chances for success while studying and following graduation.

Contact coordinator Valerie Millette at v.millette@concordia.ca to book an appointment. Also, check the website for volunteer opportunities. New ones are posted each week.

The LIVE Centre is located in rooms H-608.1 and H-608.2 in the Henry F. Hall Building (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.).

For students interested in applying for a work-study position as LIVE Resource Centre Assistant, now’s the time! The deadline is May 31.

Concordia Counselling and Development

Both campus branches of Concordia’s Counselling and Development will be open all summer. As with the fall and winter terms, the guidance of student mentors and career and personal advice are still available.

While regular workshops won’t be provided through the summer, a few handy services are still offered.

Writing assistance or math tutoring
Book a one-on-one appointment with a trained student tutor to help with writing or math assignments. It’s a great way to get help with structure, tips on starting a major assignment, or gathering feedback to make your work stronger.

Can’t make an appointment and have an urgent problem? Drop by room H-662 in the Hall Building on Mondays and Tuesdays between 4 and 6 p.m. for a quick consultation.

Language conversation groups
Counselling and Development also offers opportunities for students looking to improve their English or French.

Both offered in Room H-662 in the Hall Building, the French conversation group, Jazz-ons, is offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through May and June, 3 to 4 p.m. The English conversation group, Talk Times, is offered Mondays through Thursdays from 12 to 1 p.m. Groups are drop-in, but space is limited.

Counselling and Development is located on the Sir George Williams Campus in Room H-440 of the Hall Building and on the Loyola Campus in Room AD-103 of the Administration Building (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.).

Libraries

The most significant change to services offered at Concordia Libraries is the suspension of 24-hour service until the fall term. Over the summer, the hours vary for different departments and sections of the Libraries.

While at the library this summer, students might notice maintenance workers installing additional electrical outlets. The work is in anticipation of the increased number of laptop-wielding students this fall term.

The Webster Library is located on the Sir George Williams Campus in the J.W. McConnell Library Building (1400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.). The Vanier Library is located on the Loyola Campus (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.).

Le Gym

During the four-month summer session (May 2 to August 28), the student price for general gym access is $60, prorated at $15 a month. Although most fitness classes are already at capacity, ask at the front desk — there might be room. Classes range from $25 to $45 for the entire summer and many are conducted twice a week.

For those who want to take training a step further, Le Gym’s highly qualified personal trainers are ready and available over the summer. Appointments are available all week at a rate of $25 per hour.

Le Gym is located in the Metro level of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.). Operating hours are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Health Services

Over the summer, Concordia Health Services will provide access to nurses and doctors and the walk-in clinic.

On the Sir George Williams Campus, Health Services is located in Room GM-200, Guy-Metro Building (1550 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.). Operating hours are Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No walk-in clinic will be offered on Fridays.

On the Loyola Campus, Health Services is located in room AD-103.10 in the Administration Building (7141 Sherbooke St. W.). Operating hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursdays closed; Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shuttle bus

The summer schedule for the shuttle bus between the campuses is currently in effect. The bus departs from each campus once an hour, Monday to Friday. This schedule will continue until September 2.

From the Loyola Campus: The bus will leave every hour at quarter to the hour between 7:45 a.m. and 7:45 p.m.

From the Sir George Williams Campus: The bus will leave every hour at quarter past the hour between 8:15 a.m. and 8:15 p.m.
