Youth Action Montreal, a non-profit organization, invites the public to attend Living Your Legacy: A Youth Summit on Community Engagement.

In partnership with Concordia University and the Concordia Student Union, the organization has invited four keynote speakers: David Suzuki, world-renowned environmentalist; Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa; Michaëlle Jean, former Governor General of Canada (Jean will address the audience via a prerecorded video, while her husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond will be present); and Craig Kielburger, founder and chair of Free The Children.

The conference aims to inspire thousands of students to become active in community development, human rights, environment, and HIV/AIDS education.

When: Thursday, April 28 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Where: The Palais des Congrès de Montréal (1001 Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle)

While the summit is focused on promoting community engagement in youth, organizers expect the wider public to find it compelling as well.

Admission is $55 and $20 for Concordia students. Tickets can be purchased from the  Youth Action Montreal website or Concordia Advancement and Alumni Relations online  or by telephone at 514-848-2424, ext. 4397, or toll-free at 1-888-777-3330. RSVP by April 21.

(Please note: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, will no longer be able to attend the conference since his diplomatic expertise is required on a peace mission to the Ivory Coast.)

Concordia students Peter Schiefke and Mohamed Shuriye began the group in 2006. The organization is a registered not-for-profit organization that seeks to support youth engagement through annual conferences and special events. The group represents over 250,000 university and college students attending 11 different post-secondary institutions in Montreal.

This is the second edition of the summit. The first conference, Less Talk, More Action: A Youth Summit on Climate Change, was held in March 2007, and welcomed former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and David Suzuki to speak to more than 5,000 students from Montreal colleges and universities.
