For music students seeking fame or fortune

Orchestral auditions open to Concordia music students. A bursary is also up for grabs
January 19, 2011

Concordia students focusing on stringed instruments can apply to the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada Foundation for the Peter Mendell Award.

The $2,500 bursary will be awarded to a student of the violin, viola, cello, or doublebass. Applicants must be 25 years old or younger on the application deadline of May 1.

For full details on the award and how to apply, see the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada Foundation web site.

Jean-Philippe Tremblay, conductor of the Orchestre de la Francophonie, invites music students between the ages of 18 and 30 to submit candidacy for the orchestra. The ensemble is considered a stepping-stone between university and a professional career in music.

The selected musicians will participate in a three-week residence program with professors offering advanced training and master classes at the end of June and early July 2011 in Ottawa and Montreal. Participation involves classical and pop music concerts in Quebec and Ontario, CD recording, chamber music and the chance to work with composers and different conductors.

For full details on applying, and for the required forms, see the orchestra’s web site. The application deadline is February 11.
