With a 30-20 victory over the McGill Martlets on Sunday, the Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team finishes the regular season with a perfect 6-0 win-loss record.

This achievement marks the first time since 1994 that the Concordia women’s rugby team has had an undefeated season. The Stingers also won three exhibition games before the start of the Quebec campaign, giving them a 9-0 record overall.

“It was not what I expected when we started the year,” says head coach Graeme McGravie. “I knew we had to play Laval twice and I would’ve been happy with a split in those games. But I am very happy with a 6-0 record in conference play.”

Concordia beat its toughest opponent – the Laval Rouge et Or – by scores of 10-9 and 15-10 in the regular season. The strong showing locks up first place in the Quebec standings and gives Concordia home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Stingers will host a semifinal game on Sunday, October 24, at 3 p.m. at Concordia Stadium (Loyola Campus, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W.). The opponent will be determined when the last game of the season takes place Wednesday night between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and McGill.

McGravie is optimistic about moving forward in the post season. “We have very strong forwards,” he says. “No one seems to be able to match us. We’re winning the physical battles in games.”

Stinger fans can follow playoff action on webcasts at ssncanada.ca or by dropping by Concordia Stadium. Tickets are $5.

Rugby extra:
Jackie Tittley, a third-year inside centre, with the Concordia Stingers women's rugby team has been named Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF) Female Athlete of the Week.

Tittley was an integral part of Concordia’s 30-20 victory over the McGill Martlets on Sunday. She scored 10 points – a try, a convert and a penalty kick. She was unstoppable in the match and her kicking game was exceptional.

She finishes the Quebec university season as the leading scorer in the conference with 78 points. A 22-year-old native of Kirkland, Que., she is currently studying Leisure Sciences at Concordia.
