The Sobey Art Foundation and Art Gallery of Nova Scotia announced the five finalists for the 2014 Sobey Art Award. The short list includes Nadia Myre, MFA 02.

Myre is a visual artist from Quebec and an Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg.  Her multi-disciplinary practice is inspired by participant involvement as well as recurring themes of identity, language, longing and loss. Her works are on permanent exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Gallery of Canada.

Myre has received numerous grants and awards, most notably:

  • Pratt & Whitney Canada’s ‘Les Elles de l’art’ for the Conseil des arts de Montréal (2011),

  • Quebec Arts Council’s Prix à la création artistique pour la region des Laurentides (2009), and

  • a Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum (2003).

Myre was named to the long list for the Sobey Art Award in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014; this is her first time on the short list.

The Sobey Art Award is awarded annually to a Canadian artist under the age of 40 who has exhibited his or her work in a public or commercial gallery. The winner will receive $50,000 and the four other finalists $10,000.

The winner of the 2014 Sobey Art Award will be announced at a ceremony on November 19, 2014.
