1. UN adopts its first resolution to fight sexual abuse within their personnel

  • The UN Security Council adopted a resolution strengthening measures against sexual abuse by peacekeepers.
  • This is the first resolution on the fight against sexual abuse committed by UN personnel in peace missions to be adopted so far.
2. Rebel attacks led by the Maï-Maï and FDLR rebels leave 7 dead

  • March 12 – 13, two attacks by the Maï-Maï and FDLR rebels left 7 dead.
  • The attacks took place in nature conservations in Chondo and Kawu.

 

3. South Kivu: Attack against Doctors without Borders

(Radio-Okapi, independent/privately-owned newspaper, article dated 14 March 2016, in French) Sud-Kivu: nouvelle attaque armée de la base de MSF à Baraka

  • Attack on NGO, Doctors Without Borders by armed bandits in Baraka, South Kivu. They have reduced their operations in the area since.
  • It was allegedly coordinated by a group of young armed men named, “Balala Rondo.”
5. FARDC launch operations in Rutshuru, due to insecurity against the FDLR

  • The FARDC have launched operations against Rwandan rebels the FDLR in the Rutshuru territory.
  • These operations take place after the attacks in Chondo from March 11.
  • Many families have since fled to neighboring Uganda, due to the presence of the Rwandan rebels. 
6. Police arrest 10 activists from the citizen pro-democracy movement

  • 10 activists peacefully demonstrating were arrested in Goma, North Kivu.
  • They were demanding the release of fellow activists Fred Bauma and Yves Makwambala. The two were taken away on accounts of exercising freedom of expression.
