Writers Read is eager to present a panel of insightful writers! Join us as poet and publisher of Brick Magazine Laurie Graham, poet and executive editor of the New York Review of Books Jana Prikryl, and poet, publisher, and anthologist Derek Beaulieu take part in a professional panel where they will discuss how to make a career through writing.

Following the panel, members from Concordia's graduate literary journal, Headlight Anthology, will read from their personal work. Finally, Graham, Prikryl, and Beaulieu will each read their own work.  

Writers Read is part of Concordia University’s Creative Writing program and is supported by the Department of English and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Writers Read, directed by Professor Sina Queyras since 2011, invites renowned and emerging authors, both Canadian and international, to read from and discuss their work with students and local audiences. In addition to readings, the series includes Master Classes and professional developmental activities spanning the school year.

About the Speakers

Laurie Graham

Laurie Graham is a writer, an editor, and the publisher of Brick magazine. Her debut book, Rove (2013), was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award for Best First Book of Poetry in Canada. Settler Education (2016) was a finalist for Ontario’s Trillium Award for Poetry. Her poetry has been shortlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize, won the Thomas Morton Poetry Prize, and appeared in the Best Canadian Poetry anthologies. 

Jana Prikryl

Jana Prikyl is a Canadian/American poet born in the former Czechoslovakia. She is currently the Executive editor of the New York Review of Books. Considered “one of the most original voices of her generation,” her most recent collection, Midwood (2022), explores love, sex, motherhood, and marriage both “plainly and urgently.” Prikryl is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Radcliffe Fellowship and the winner of the Award of Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. 

Derek Beaulieu

Derek Beaulieu is the author of twenty-six books of poetry, conceptual fiction, and critical writing, and over 200 chapbooks and six edited volumes. His work is consistently praised as some of the most radical and challenging in contemporary Canadian writing. Beaulieu was Calgary’s Poet Laureate from 2014-2016, and has been Banff’s Poet Laureate since 2022. He is the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Director of Literary Arts. 

Headlight Anthology

Headlight Anthology is an annual, student-run journal published out of Concordia University, Canada. The journal operates out of Concordia’s graduate English Literature & Creative Writing department, the students of which compose its staff.
