Come hear from two leading African experts talk about the evolution of the City of Kigali since the 1994 Rwanda genocide. How is the city now? What are the challenges to come? What can individuals learn from the people whom have helped and are still rebuilding the city?

This event is part of the MTL 2050 lecture series. The Faculty of Arts and Science, in collaboration with the Montreal Institute of Genocide and Human Rights Studies, are co-hosting this seminar.

About the speakers


Njeri Cerere

Njeri Cerere is a planning, development and environmental consultant based in Nairobi, Kenya. Cerere currently serves as an urban planning and development advisor to Property Development and Management Ltd (PDM), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network. At PDM she is responsible for developing sustainable plans and strategies for the organization’s property investment, development and management portfolio in the greater East African region.

Prior to her entry into private practice, Cerere was the chief executive officer of Kenya Property Developers Association (KPDA), the representative body of the residential, commercial and industrial property development sector in Kenya. In 2015, she created Citilinks Africa in Nairobi with Sebastien Goethals, which takes a holistic and resilient approach to African urbanism.

Vincent Rwigamba

Vincent Rwigamba has worked with international organizations such as UN-Habitat, Shelter Afrique, Cities Alliance and World Bank. He recently worked with the Rwanda Housing Authority as an urban designer, where he served on different urban design projects, green housing design, land use planning, and environment and urban development issues. Before that, he worked with the City of Kigali as an urban planner.

He is currently working as a consultant in urban design and planning, environment planning and management, infrastructure planning and supervision of work executions in major cities in Rwanda.
