The educational and research activities of universities have a large environmental footprint. Universities are responsible for nitrogen (N) emissions from food services and wastewater treatment and carbon (C) emissions from energy use, including daily commuting. In addition, research at McGill and Université de Montréal (UdeM) indicates that one of the largest contributors to these footprints is long-distance mobility on the part of academics, staff, and students. In this seminar, we will present the N-footprint initiative from McGill and UdeM universities and discuss whether academic travel is really necessary to improve research. We will show that reducing the environmental footprint of institutions is a shared responsibility between universities and individuals.

This event is part of the monthly seminar series of the Loyola Sustainability Research Centre, presented in collaboration with the Loyola College for Diversity and Sustainability. Like most of our seminars, it is aimed at a general audience; students welcome.
