Position description

The Department of Applied Human Sciences at Concordia University, invites applications for three 12-month Limited Term appointments in the following areas:

  1. Youth Work and Human Relations (24_LTA_AHSC_M)
  2. Human Relations and Human Systems Intervention (24_LTA_AHSC_M2)
  3. Recreation and Leisure (24_LTA_AHSC_M3)

Limited-term Faculty members at Concordia are full-time faculty members whose primary duties include teaching and service, with no research obligations.

Qualifications and assets

Concordia University is an English-language institution of higher learning at which the primary language of instruction and research is English. Since this position supports academic functions of the university, proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French, including reading and grading student work in French, is an asset.            

For candidates for the position in Youth Work and Human Relations (24_LTA_AHSC_M), a PhD in a relevant discipline is required. Assets for the position include advanced training and practice with diverse families and/or in youth work settings and demonstrated ability to teach experientially. The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program in Human Relations in the Family Sciences and Youth Concentration (courses could include the Internship in Youth and Family Work, Counselling Skills, and Parent-Child Relations). Teaching could also include courses in the Youth Work Graduate Diploma (i.e., Case Management).

Candidates for the position in Human Relations and Human Systems Intervention (24_LTA_AHSC_M2) must have a Masters in a relevant social science discipline with significant related experience. A PhD in a relevant social science discipline is considered an asset. It is also advantageous for candidates to have advanced professional training in human relations and group process intervention. The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program in Human Relations in the Organization Development and Change Concentration (courses could include Organization Development I, Leadership and Facilitation in Small Groups, Organizational Development and Change: Models and Methods). Teaching could also include courses in the MA in Human Systems Intervention (e.g., Facilitating Individual and Small Group Learning Processes).

Candidates for the position in Recreation and Leisure (24_LTA_AHSC_M3) must have completed a Masters in Recreation and Leisure Studies or a relevant social science discipline. A PhD in a relevant social science discipline is considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in leisure program planning and design, administration of leisure services, and the historical foundations of leisure and recreation as well as their role in current society, and have a proven ability to facilitate experiential learning, build relationships with community partners, and engage with a diverse student population to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. Additional expertise in youth and leisure would be an asset. The successful candidate will teach foundational undergraduate courses in areas of recreation and leisure (courses could include Recreation and Leisure in Contemporary Society; Program Planning Design & Evaluation; Community Recreation Planning; Historical Foundations of Leisure; Recreation; Administration of Leisure Services and Youth and Leisure).

The Department of Applied Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary social and human science unit unique not only in Canada, but also around the world. The department offers undergraduate programs in Human Relations, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and Therapeutic Recreation, and graduate programs in Human Systems Intervention (MA), and Youth Work (GradDip). Key aspects that cut across the different disciplines in our department are the applied nature of our work; our emphasis on experiential learning; a systemic approach to our various areas of research, teaching, and practice; a concern for quality of life, health, and wellness across these systems; and, ultimately, a focus on social justice.

The Faculty of Arts and Science is the largest faculty at Concordia.
