SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation

July 2025

Fires are igniting all around us. They are growing, suffocating the land and those who dwell on it. Every year, more and more—so much fire that we lose track of when they begin or if they truly end. The liberal lie that things are always improving, that if we step back and watch, history is bending towards justice... it all feels like smoke in our lungs. Social transformation doesn’t happen by accident nor by remaining passive.

Hope is a discipline, writes Miriame Kaba; only through constant organizing, community care, and collective resistance do we pull away from injustice. It is an active struggle.

Within the SHIFT Learning Community, there are dozens of organizations that are planting resilient forests in Montreal, little by little, every day. We often see the fire, but not the patient labour that quells them, stops them from spreading, and prevents future infernos. The fire is all around us, yet so is a germinative groundswell. The work has begun—what will you do?

Hosted by Brique par Brique, the JIA Foundation, and the Montreal Chinatown Roundtable, with support from SHIFT Concordia, this gathering will feature a discussion exploring the key strategies, tensions, and lessons that shape the fight for community-owned infrastructure. Hoodwinked in the Hothouse: False Solutions to Climate Change

Thursday, July 24 @ 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Join Climate Justice Montreal for a workshop crafted around the Hoodwinked in the Hothouse zine and focusing on issues such as hydroelectricity, carbon capture, natural gas and the real solutions to the climate crisis! In the 12 years since the second edition of the zine was released as a pop-ed zine, practices and policies to address climate change have expanded and deepened false solutions in shocking and alarming ways. We see the pressing need to address the root causes of environmental and climate injustices by confronting four centuries of colonial-imperialism, ongoing patriarchal and white supremacist oppression, and today’s extreme neoliberal, globalized, industrial capitalist expansion. Hoodwinked demonstrates how climate change false solutions perpetuate, expand and reinforce these structures.

"Bye Bye DEI": towards cultural overhaul instead of workshops

"DEI efforts ramped up during a moment of acute crisis, and in crisis moments, we all search desperately for solutions. That may be why so many of us have made DEI into a catch-all fix-all convoluted space."

Painting of 4 colourful birds with puffed up throats.

In the last five years, institutional trends in “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” have largely been focused on improving how marginalized peoples are brought into and retained at an organization. However, those institutions still have untenable workloads, retention challenges, and dissatisfied employees. Concretely, how better off are we in comparison to before?

Intentionally Transformative (3ʳᵈ) Spaces

"A third place can be for gathering, learning from each other, building trust and accountability, and imagining a different future from the one we are told is inevitable."

People gathering and speaking together in the SHIFT Centre

Third places are where informal public life and community happens, distinctly outside of homes (first places) and workplaces (second places). This article looks at two examples at Concordia—the SHIFT Centre itself and the Greenhouse—and examines the criteria that make them spaces of social wellbeing and of resistance in Montreal.

Stratégies communautaires pour le pouvoir collectif

People talking and hugging at a community event

Painting of 4 colourful birds with puffed up throats.

People gathering and speaking together in the SHIFT Centre
