For some of our instruments our staff can provide training or even perform analyses as a service.

Confocal Microscopy

Training & Support

Our microscope facility is equipped with a Leica TCS SP2 confocal microscope. New users are required to take an initial training session. Once trained, users can book time to acquire images. To offset maintenance costs, users are charged an hourly fee. Contact us to find out about fees. Image processing/analysis using Leica's proprietary imaging software is performed on our dedicated imaging station. Sample Submission

Samples should be prepared using fluorescently labelled dyes whose excitation optima preferably coincide with any of the 4 laser lines that are available on our system (namely 458 nm, 476 nm, 488 nm, 496 nm, 514 nm, 543 nm or 633 nm). When multiple stains are being used, judicious choice of fluorophores is required to ensure that excitation or emission spectra do not significantly overlap. For optimal optical performance, #1.5 coverslips (~170 µm thick) are recommended and are preferably free of immersion oil. Where possible, samples should be mounted on the coverslip first and then placed on the slide in order to maximize the available working distance of our objective lenses.


Digital micrography

You can book time to acquire digital micrographs using our digital microscopy workstation. The workstation comprises a Lumenera Infinity 3-1C 1.4 megapixel color cooled CCD camera which is mounted on our Zeiss Axiophot fluorescent microscope and a Leica DFC420 5 megapixel color digital camera which is mounted our Nikon SMZ1500 Stereo microscope.

Support

Training and usage of the Zeiss microscope, Nikon stereomiscrope and SPOT digital camera is free of charge. An hourly fee is applied to fluorescent microscopy acquisitions in order to offset the cost of maintaining the Hg vapor lamp. Microarray scanning

Support

You can analyze your microarrays using our microarray scanners. A 'per slide' fee is charged to offset the maintenance fee of the equipment. Contact us to find out about fees. Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC)

We provide assitance to load your specimens on our Beckman Optima XL-I Analytical Ultracentrifuge. To offset maintenance costs, fees are charged per run. Contact us to find out about fees.
