The Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema is divided into three distinct areas: Film Production (BFA; MFA); Film Animation (BFA); and Film and Moving Image Studies (BFA; MA; PhD). Situated within Concordia’s vibrant Faculty of Fine Arts, faculty and students enjoy numerous cross-disciplinary opportunities, state-of-the-art resources and facilities, and a rich artistic and cultural context for research and study. Each year, the School of Cinema accepts an upward of 330 students and plans for growth are currently underway.

The Film Production program has gained a reputation as a preeminent cinema arts training program in Canada. Our mission is to provide a creatively rich environment for the development of new visions in the cinematic arts. We encourage the exploration of cinema as a medium of artistic expression supporting diverse voices and perspectives. The program fosters an environment that emphasizes experimentation in both fiction and non-fiction cinema production. Students learn how to work in studio and on location with fellow classmates, developing an in-depth knowledge of the techniques involved in creating a film from scenario to screening; however, alternative approaches to cinema creation—where students pursue independent practices as artists—are also encouraged. There is considerable technical learning in our program, and we provide hands-on training with state-of-the-art production and post-production equipment.

Our talented cohort learn to articulate a fascination for the medium of cinema and seek to develop their individual artistic voice. Students go on to thrive in careers as directors, producers, cinematographers, picture editors, sound designers, screenwriters, and cinema technicians. Some graduating students take their production skills into other creative fields such as design, music, interactive arts, or careers that require a high degree of skill in project management, teamwork and problem solving.

With over 4,000 students, faculty, and staff, the Faculty of Fine Arts is among the five largest art and design schools in North America. Nestled in the heart of a pulsing city, embraced by a dynamic research university, the Faculty of Fine Arts benefits from extraordinary access to brilliant practitioners, thriving venues, cross-cultural perspectives, and an extensive network of outstanding facilities for research and production.

Taking advantage of our place within the rich fabric of a research university and our long history as one of the premiere sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, the Faculty of Fine Arts is currently engaged in a transformative moment in which pedagogical, conceptual, theoretical, and material practices find resonance with a significant diversity of approaches. In our university community we value equally those practices that embrace aesthetic activism, live performance, historical scholarship, technical experimentation, skills-based production, community fieldwork and education, and therapeutic practices as well as traditional and digital fabrication. In addition to curricular advances, the formation of significant research centres and external partnerships in the Faculty of Fine Arts continue to enrich opportunities for faculty and students alike.
