The Awakening

The Awakening is an intimate study of the performative body. The work consists of a video projection in which a group of individuals participate in a body exploration exercise under the gaze of the camera. The body research work is inspired by the rigorous theatrical training methods of Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999). There is no choreography. Playing the role of master director the artist rather asks his participants to perform acts of endurance and guides them through a series of exercises extending over a very long period of time. Thus, the artist questions not only the mastery of the technique of the body, but also the mastery and self-authority in space. The participating individuals are guided, of course, but they have the freedom of specific gestures, intensity or even positions that they will explore during the exercice. Their only obligation is to continue their physical work while the camera continually examines them. The spectator becomes witness to a very intimate and interior exploration of the participant’s moving bodies.

The Awakening est une étude intime du corps performatif. L’œuvre est une projection vidéo dans laquelle un groupe d’individus participe à un exercice d’exploration corporel sous l'oeil de la caméra. Le travail de recherche kinesthésique est inspiré des méthodes d’entraînement théâtrales rigoureuses de Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999). Il n’y a aucune chorégraphie. Jouant le rôle de metteur en scène, l'artiste demande plutôt à ses participants d'accomplir des actes d'endurance et les guide à travers une série d’exercices exploratoires se prolongeant sur une très longue période de temps. Ainsi, l'artiste questionne non seulement la maîtrise de la technique du corps, mais aussi la maîtrise et l'autorité de soi dans l'espace. Les participants sont guidés, certes, mais ils détiennent une liberté des gestes spécifiques, de l’intensité ou même encore des positions qu'ils vont explorer pendant l’exercice. Leur seule obligation est de continuer leur travail physique alors que la caméra les scrute continuellement du regard. Le spectateur devient témoin d’une exploration très intime et intérieure du corps en mouvement des participants.
