Living, Leading & Facilitating in the Grey Zone of Change

We are in a world facing numerous systems transitions. From hierarchies to networks and sociocracies. From office-based to a global and mobile workforce. From a human resource era to a co-dependent AI/VR/robotics era. From patriarchy to equality-based systems. We are in the midst of major shifts and transitions.
 

So, what is the grey zone of change?

I define the grey zone of change as the space in-between systems - between the from and to of change. Systems may be worldviews, philosophies, organization transformations, methodologies or social systems. How do we lead and facilitate transformations in this context? 

In this session, participants will engage in an inquiry around questions such as:

• What is the experience of the grey zone?
  
• How do we lead/facilitate transformational change while in the grey zone?
  
• What is required of leaders, facilitators and everyday people experiencing the grey zone?
  
• Now what?

Participants will share together through inquiry and small groups and in collective world cafe dialogues to uncover and share their learning with the whole room. The grey zone being experienced in the fields of organization development will be used to illustrate the issues and possible responses inherent in the grey zone.

This workshop is targeted at all who experience themselves as navigating the grey zone of change and those who lead and facilitate within it.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

1. Shared individual and collective experiences of the grey zone
2. Discussed responses to living, leading and facilitating in the grey zone
3. Shared insights and applications for the grey zone

About the facilitator

Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson is an award-winning scholar, Organization Development Consultant, and writer. She has 15 years’ experience across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors; Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in her areas of expertise. Yabome was named an Institute for Social Innovation Scholar at Fielding Graduate University, CA for her published research into the growth and development needs of war-affected people in Africa and is a contributor to the ground-breaking book:  Dialogic Organization Development: The Theory and Practice of Transformational Change (Berrett-Koehler, 2015). She has also been awarded International African Woman of the Year by UK-based Women4Africa and was the first ever recipient of the US-based Organization Development Network’s Emerging Organization Development Practitioner award. She received the prestigious 2018 Harry Jerome Professional Excellence Award in Canada. In addition to peer-reviewed publications, she is author of Identities, a short story collection about global African experiences and Lead Editor of the We Will Lead Africa book series.
