I am thrilled to share with you all the first edition of the Gina Cody School newsletter! There are always amazing things happening within our community, and this newsletter allows us to share and celebrate some of the many achievements and initiatives of our faculty, students and staff.

2023 has started off strong for the Gina Cody School. We are expanding our research portfolio, delivering an excellent student experience, and growing our team. I am grateful to all of you for the contributions you make to this incredible School. Together, we are shaping the future of education and making a lasting impact on the lives of our students.

I hope you enjoy learning about all that has been going on recently at the Gina Cody School. We plan on rolling out this newsletter on a quarterly basis at a minimum.

Gina Cody School awards 11 professors Research and Innovation Fellowships

11 Faculty members have been selected for our new Gina Cody Research and Innovation Fellowships. The program aims to support professors working on collaborative research and innovation projects that have the potential for meaningful partnerships with industrial and government agencies. Congratulations to our new fellows!


Gina Cody School Innovation Fund Awards

Six student teams presented their projects under the new Gina Cody School Innovation Fund. Congratulations to Pheonex and RLP for winning the Judges Choice Awards and receiving $50,000 each to support phase two of their innovation projects!

A special mention goes to Microlock for receiving the Most Innovative Project Award and Parklive for winning the Audience Choice Award.


The Government of Canada awards Concordia University a historic $123M research grant to electrify society and decarbonize communities

Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne announced on April 28 that Concordia University will receive a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) grant of $123,160,035. The grant will be distributed over seven years and will support the activities and initiatives encompassed in Electrifying Society: Towards Decarbonized Resilient Communities. Congratulations to all the Gina Cody School Faculty members involved in securing this historic funding.

Muthu Packirisamy awarded the 2023 Robert W. Angus Medal

I am pleased to share that professor Muthu Packirisamy from the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering has been selected to receive the 2023 Robert W. Angus Medal by the CSME Awards Committee. The Robert W. Angus Medal is awarded annually to a mechanical engineer for outstanding contributions to mechanical engineering practice in Canada, including industrial innovation, technology commercialization and creativity. Congratulations on your continued success and recognition, Muthu!

Suong Van Hoa named inaugural Canada Composites Fellow

I am delighted to share that professor Suong Van Hoa from the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering has been named one of the first Canada Composites Fellows by the Canadian Association for Composites Structures and Materials (CACSMA). It is a new award that recognizes outsanding accomplishments in the field of composite structures and materials. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement, Suong!


Aerospace Meets Cybersecurity Forum and Cocktail Event

I am very excited to share that CIADI and the Security Research Centre hosted the first ever Aerospace Meets Cybersecurity Forum and Cocktail Event on Monday, April 17, 2023. The event featured panel talks from experts and discussions with industry, as well as a cocktail networking event. We had an excellent turnout at this event, and I look forward to seeing it continued success in the coming years. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible!


Capstone Sustainable Development Goals Awards

I’m pleased to announce the launch of our new Capstone Sustainable Development Goals Award. The award was developed to recognize Capstone projects that have significant potential to address the issues facing society today, as outlined by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework. The application closed in early March and I look forward to seeing the projects that were submitted.


President’s Media Outreach Awards

7 members of the Gina Cody School were recognized at the President’s Media Outreach Awards on February 16. Congratulations to Chadi Assi, Tony Nasr, Ursula Eicker, Muthu Packirisamy, Vahid Karamzadeh, Mohsen Habibi and Sherbin Foroughi. I am proud of their efforts in helping spotlight our School’s amazing work to various media channels.

Concordia announces a thematic campus on energy transition in Shawinigan

The university has signed a collaboration agreement with the City of Shawinigan and the Centre National en électrochimie et en Technologies Environnementales (CNETE) to develop a thematic campus centered on energy transition. The campus will focus on crucial areas like energy storage, transport electrification, applied artificial intelligence (AI) and software engineering and cybersecurity. The campus's research and development pillar will be run by chemical and materials engineering professors at the Gina Cody School. Congratulations to those who are participating in this initiative to address climate change!


Gina Cody School students win big at Les anges du génie competition

A team of Gina Cody School students took home all three top prizes at the Les Anges du génie competition!

Their project InsightWearAI awarded them first prize from Les Anges du génie, the Coup de cœur FÉRIQUE and the Public’s Choice Award. Their total winnings amounted to $11,500.

In the research corner

I am pleased to share that Bruno Lee from the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering has received $638,500 in research funding from NSERC under their Alliance Grants – Alliance Missions, Anthropogenic greenhouse gas research program. The funding will support his research project titled A Decarbonization Framework for Existing Building Portfolios. Congratulations, Bruno!

Furthermore, Khashayar Khorasani from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has received $350,000 in research funding from the Canadian Space Agency as part of their CubeSats Initiative in Canada for STEM (CUBICS) Stream 2 program. Congratulations, Khash!


Investissement Quebec – Karim Zaghib

Investissement Québec recognized Karim Zaghib from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering for putting Quebec on the world stage with his ground-breaking research. Congratulations, Karim!

Thank you for attending the last Law Meets Engineering lecture series of the semester

What a great year for Law Meets Engineering! We had six highly relevant and interesting talks throughout the 2022-2023. 

The last lecture took place on March 22, 2023 led by Jean-Nicolas Delage, a lawyer specialized in intellectual property strategies for rapidly growing technological firms.
