Looking Back on the Romany Eveleigh Residency
The most recent edition of the Romany Eveleigh Residency in Baie-Saint-Paul, organized in partnership with the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, brought two unique practices into dialogue with the Charlevoix landscape. Lou Bou explored alchemical image-making along the river’s edge, using outdoor tintype photography to collaborate with the elements. Cecilia McKinnon responded to the region’s geological and tidal formations through installations, videos, and writing, tracing links between labour, land, and transformation. |

Performance for the Camera: Queerer than the Sum of its Parts
In this digital residency in collaboration with revue Esse, artist-writer and cultural mediator naveed L. salek nejad explores ‘performing for the camera’ as a hybrid medium that offers subversive strategies for realizing one’s gender identity ‘beyond the binary.’ Their goal is to further the representation of LGBT+ narratives in Canadian contemporary art at the intersection of performance, video art, and gender identity. “Entering through the back door takes away any straightforward approach to meaning-making. We begin to question our expectations and, thus, which norms dictate how we relate to and interpret art, shaping which histories are deemed canonical and memorable. In collaboration with Esse's Digital Residencies series, this program invites authors to reflect on Esse’s print and digital archives through the production of an essay. |
