Visiting scholars

The Peter O'Brien Visiting Scholar in Canadian Irish Studies

This position, offered by invitation and jointly funded by Concordia University and the Canadian Irish Studies Foundation, brings a distinguished scholar to teach within the programs of the School of Irish Studies every fall semester. The duties of the Peter O’Brien Visiting Scholar are to teach two undergraduate courses within an appropriate department and to give a public lecture under the auspices of the School's Irish Lecture Series.

Dr. Jérôme aan de Wiel

Dr. aan de Wiel is currently Lecturer in History and European Studies at University College Cork. He has also previously taught at the University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College, and University of Rheims (Reims, France). Most recently in 2021, Dr. aan de Wiel was the recipient of a National Teaching Hero Award, awarded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education & the Union of  Students in Ireland.

His research interests include twentieth-century European and Irish history, and European Studies. He has published extensively on these topics, including the monographs East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90: Espionage, diplomacy & terrorism (University of Manchester Press, 2015) and Ireland's Helping Hand to Europe, 1945-1950: Combatting Hunger from Normandy to Tirana (Central European University Press, 2021). He currently has another monograph in preparation, Ireland's Postwar Humanitarian Aid in Europe, 1945-1950: A photographic narrative due to be published in 2025.

In the Fall 2023 semester, Dr. aan de Wiel taught History of Ireland (IRST 211 A / HIST 211 A) and 20th Century Ireland in Europe and the World / IRST 398 B / HIST 398 C.
