Dear colleagues,

Following the announcement by Provost Whitelaw of my reappointment as dean, approved by the board of governors on October 21, I want to thank you all for your support throughout the last four years, and more specifically during the pandemic. Thanks to the astounding dedication of the members of our leadership team, the hard work and patience of our staff members, and the commitment to research and teaching from our faculty members, the John Molson School of Business is one of the most respected, responsible and relevant business schools in the world. Our reputation keeps improving, thanks to every single action that each of us has taken. Our school is the chosen destination for students who know they will learn so much, and have a positive impact on our society and better their own lives.

Research

Talking about our accomplishments, I would like to highlight some recent successes of our colleagues. Concordia announced the 2021 Celebration of Research Excellence recipients. Congratulations to Michel Magnan, Distinguished University Research Professor, Thomas Walker, Concordia University Research Chair in Emerging Risk Management (Tier 1), Zeynep Arsel, Concordia University Research Chair in Consumption, Markets and Society (Tier 2), and Anton Shevchenko, Concordia University Research Chair in Operations and Sustainable Development (New Scholar) who were all recognized for their research achievements!

It is an honor to announce that Michel Magnan has also been elected to serve on the board of Movement Desjardins. To see our esteemed John Molson faculty members hold such influential and important roles in our society’s organizations is a testament to the influence we have as a school. Congratulations Michel on this appointment!

We welcome Rucsandra Moldovan as the new director, Desjardins Centre for Innovation in Business Finance, effective until June 30, 2024. Rucsandra replaces Michel Magnan who has held this post since 2013. Thank you, Michel, for your tireless commitment to John Molson and the Desjardins Centre.

New roles

Unfortunately, Kamal Argheyd and David Newton have informed me that they need to step down from their role as department chair. I wish to thank them both for their hard work as chairs of the Management and Finance departments, respectively. As of October 15, Thomas Walker has agreed to assume the role of acting chair of Finance until mid-January 2022, and Linda Dyer will be the acting chair of Management beginning January 1 until June 30, 2022. I want to thank both Thomas and Linda for stepping into these important roles for our faculty. An official search for these chair positions will be launched in the winter semester.

Congratulations to Samantha Hamer on her new role as administrative assistant with the Goodman Institute for Investment Management, beginning December 1.

Danielle Berthiaume, department coordinator in Accountancy has taken her well-deserved retirement! We also wish our very best to Sandra Romanini, department coordinator in Finance, who recently started a new position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I want to thank both of them for their contributions to John Molson and their respective departments.

Events

This Thursday November 18th is the inaugural John Molson School Day and we look forward to celebrating with you! This day is designed to celebrate our outstanding students, faculty, staff, and alumni. On that day, we invite you to share a social media post with the hashtag #JohnMolsonSchool to share your pride and tell the world what being a part of the John Molson community means to you. Plus, enjoy a virtual event with six outstanding speakers. We hope to see you there!

Back this year is the annual John Molson Dean’s Awards. Recent changes to the COVID-related guidelines surrounding events have allowed us to plan a hybrid celebration (in person and virtual) for December 7th. Deadline to submit your nomination forms for the awards is tomorrow, November 17th. Details for the celebration were sent this morning – we hope to see you there!

Return to campus for Winter 2022

Students and faculty members have been informed that nearly all classes will be held in person beginning January 2022. Our campus will soon be buzzing with life and laughter again – I look forward to seeing our halls full of this energy soon! After consultation with our leadership team and unit managers, our staff members will be present on campus at least 3 days a week at the start of the Winter semester. As always, we will keep monitoring the situation and adapt accordingly.

I hope the rest of term runs smoothly for everyone.

Be well and stay safe.

Anne-Marie Croteau, PhD, CDir
