ARTH 267-B Aspects of the History of Photography

This survey course will present a series of thematic lectures that draw on the history of photography from its invention in the early nineteenth century to the present day. By studying the work of European, American, and Canadian photographers, we will see how different practitioners and audiences defined the medium and used it. Photography's distinct and unprecedented character will be situated in various cultural contexts, including social conditions, political shifts, and technological developments. Matters of influence - the relationship between photography and painting, or photography and mass media - will be examined in light of public and private image-making, from the first analogue techniques to digital media.
