  • M - 09:00-11:30
  • EV-1.605
  • INSTRUCTOR: ANITA GRANTS

This course will provide an overview of ancient Greek sculptural and architectural forms and consider their lasting influence on Western Art and Architecture.  Changes in pottery decoration and narrative will also be discussed.  Beginning with a look at the stylistic commonalities with Egyptian and earlier periods, we will examine the development in Greek sculptural aesthetics which occurred over the next 500 years.  Of particular interest is how sculpture, initially integral (and thought inferior) to building, changed as movement was introduced.  These architectural styles themselves will be studied, particularly in the context of later Roman and Enlightenment building. We will conclude by looking at the sculpture of Auguste Rodin and how his modernism was based in Greek forms.  Students will be expected to visit the Ancient Cultures galleries of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  Evaluation will consist of mid-term and final examinations and a written research assignment.
