ARTH 367 - Studies in 20th-Century Art and Architecture: The Exile’s Return: The Rediscovery of Painting (1969-1989)

This 3-credit lecture class focuses on the return to figuration in late 20th century painting.  It will initially examine the aesthetics of formalism and conceptualism that characterized post-war art making and then introduce students to the general return to imagery and social content in painting during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Through lectures and readings the course will explore the concepts of modernism and post-modernism, as well as the impact of the Cold War and the sexual revolution. Terms and movements to be addressed include the School of New York, Pop Art, Nouveau réalisme, Regionalism, School of London, Neo-Expressionism, International Trans-avant-garde, New Image Painting, Photo-Realism, Chicago Imagists, Pattern & Decoration Movement, Bad Painting, Street Art, Narrative and History Painting.
