Yearbook

July 15 – August 15, 2014

Curated by Emily Bergsma & Nancy Webb

In front of you is a collection of 48 theses, written by Concordia MA Art History students between 1990 and 1999. They have been assembled here as a visual inventory of the research trends in this department during this particular decade. Each image hints at the possible subject matter of the author’s project, while leaving room for speculation. The figures and plates have wordless conversations with one another and surprising associations begin to surface. Pared down to pictorial markers, the theses also tell fragmented stories about the academic interests of Canadian art students – from quilting, to fashion, to new technologies in art, to church architecture, to Inuit sculpture, to public art in Montreal. If nothing else, this humble exhibition provides for the wearied historian a temporary reprieve from text in the realm of images.
