Teaching & Learning Festival 2015: Digital Learning

I have been involved in surgical education for more than 15 years and obtained a Masters Degree in Medical Education from the University of Calgary in 2009. I teach in a variety of settings in medical school and residency and have won national, university, faculty and departmental awards for innovation and leadership in education. I was selected as the John Provan Canadian Outstanding Surgical Educator for 2010/11 and was awarded the University of Alberta’s McCalla Professorship in 2010 for Research in Teaching. I am also the co-creator of the ‘Surgery 101’ podcast series. I have published 40 peer-reviewed papers and 120 peer-reviewed podcasts, and have given over 200 presentations at national and international meetings. In 2011, I was named as the University of Alberta’s first Tom Williams Endowed Chair in Surgical Education. In 2014, I became the first surgeon ever selected as a 3M National Teaching Fellow, and also received the University of Alberta’s Rutherford Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Using the Web as a tool to promote reflection can bring a lot of intellectual pleasure and professional satisfaction to both students and professors. In this workshop, we will explore learning the way my students and I would explore a new subject in class. Using short videos, small-group discussions and individual mind mapping, participants to this workshop will have:

1. identified simple digital tools they can use in their teaching,
2. selected which pedagogical techniques are best suited for their preferred tools and
3. planned a course of actions for implementing their new pedagogical strategies in their own classrooms.

In this interactive workshop you will discover ways of “flipping” your classroom in order to guide students to deeper thinking and higher levels of application. Flipping your classroom can help create learning opportunities that encourage students to build knowledge together. With decreased emphasis on the transmission of knowledge made possible by today’s technology, lectures and instruction that used to be delivered in class can now be accessed at home. Class time becomes the place to work through problems, thus providing increased opportunities for students to apply knowledge and demonstrate their ability to use it. Participants in the workshop will be invited to share their own experiences using the flipped classroom and work together to come up with ways of creating meaningful learning experiences for their students.

Our first year students at Concordia are as diverse as can be. Many come from different countries, different institutions and set off on their university journey with different academic backgrounds. As well, for many, English is not their first language. What kind of resources can we offer in our introductory courses to help these students adapt to their new academic environment? In this workshop we will discuss how lecture capture can benefit these students as well as our regular students.
