September 2023

Dear colleagues,

We’re officially into the fall season. I hope everyone’s start to the term has been smooth. I wanted to share some highlights from the last month.

Annual back-to-school BBQ

I was so happy to officially welcome everyone to a new school year with our annual Back-to-School BBQ on August 30. The storm held off until we were finished, which was much appreciated! I was especially happy to see so many kids joining in on the fun. Thank you all for taking time out of your schedule to connect with your colleagues. You can see the photos from the event here.

A record-breaking Concordia Golf Classic

On September 5, Concordia’s Golf Classic celebrated 20 years with a record $600,000 for student scholarships.

Although it was also breaking records for heat that day, I was so thrilled to be part of one of Concordia's most successful fundraisers. In addition to 150 business leaders, alumni, donors and friends of Concordia, the event included executives from Canada's nine major banks. This fundraiser is the only one in Quebec that brings them all together!

I want to thank Joe Capano, Daniel Cere, Carla Tittley-René and Jennifer Stapenhorst on our John Molson University Advancement team for their work on this. I also want to thank members of the Dean’s Advisory Board who participated and contributed to this important event to raise funds in support of our students.

Lise Watier graduation ceremony

On September 12, we hosted the 2022-2023 graduation ceremony for participants in the Lise Watier Foundation Let’s Start Up program. A total of 137 women earned their program certificates. We are so proud to be a part of these graduates’ journeys and wish them all the best in the future.

CMS Career Fair

Louise Anne Coté and the Career Management Services (CMS) team hosted their annual Career Fair for John Molson students on September 18, the first edition that was sponsored by Desjardins.

The event was another great success and was highly attended, featuring 68 employers and welcoming more than 700 students. You can see photos from the event here.

The dynamic team at CMS delivered a memorable experience for our industry partners and our students. Congratulations!

One of the top Shuffle teams!

I'm so proud of our community’s fundraising efforts this year. On September 22, close to 50 JMSB members walked between the two campuses. We not only surpassed our $5,000 goal by $2,210 but we are number 6 of 15 top Shuffle teams for amount raised!

The funds will go towards the John Molson School of Business Shuffle Bursary that supports new students. Thank you all for making a difference in the lives of our students.

I’d like to congratulate Barbara Henchey, team captain, and thank her for her work again this year. Shuffle 34 had a record-breaking 906 individual shufflers; a wonderful turnout and a beautiful day to exercise, chat and support our students.

Sharing our success

The John Molson School of Business continues to perform better and better each year in a number of rankings. I’m excited to report that we are now number four in Canada on Bloomberg Businessweek's Best B-Schools 2023-2024.

Not only did we move up in the rankings from last year but we also improved our scores in four out of the five categories.

Upcoming changes to Moodle

A reminder that, beginning in the winter 2024 term, Moodle will upgrade from version 3.9 to version 4.1. Learn more about the changes and test out the new version here.

Strategic plan update

To help you incorporate our strategic goals into your presentations and other material, we have created a PowerPoint template as well as a word document that includes them as graphics. You will also find our House graphic representing the full strategic plan on our JMSB SharePoint site.

Closing remarks

As you know, all Concordia terms are now 12 weeks in length, which allows for the implementation of a fall reading week at Concordia that will take place October 10 to 13.

I wish you all a pleasant fall season and enjoy the upcoming long Thanksgiving weekend!

Warmest regards,
Anne-Marie Croteau, PhD, CDir
