Following a major call for projects this winter, our jury had the great task of reviewing and evaluating 52 exciting applications. With projects coming from across Montreal and tackling a wide range of social issues, once again, we were blown away by the potential that exists withinin our ecosystem.

We are thrilled to reveal the 7 projects selected by the jury and we look forward to supporting these new teams in socially transforming Montreal!

Development without Displacement

A workshop in collaboration with The Dépot Community Food Centre

On June 7, SHIFT and The Dépot Community Food Centre cohosted the workshop Development without Displacement: How can a community owned and led infrastructure projects counter green gentrification?

Based on research developed by Aaron Vansintjan, community organizers and engaged researchers from across Montreal gathered to reflect on the risks and opportunities associated with community infrastructure projects, particularly in their potential contribution to green gentrification. The workshop was an opportunity to gain insights and identify next steps in the development of a toolkit for community groups.

Consult the full draft of the report to learn more about the complex dynamics between community development and green gentrification.

A new strategic orientation for Year 4

Members of the steering committee at the SHIFT annual retreat

As our third year of operations came to an end, members of SHIFT’s Steering Committee and staff reunited in-person for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

Considering, among other things, the trajectory the Centre has taken during its few years, and the new opportunities that will emerge with access to a permanent physical space in the fall of 2022, the day ended with a clear indication of the strategic orientation for Year 4: Emphasize a deep investment approach

A key feature of the deep investment approach is a focus on cultivating strong relationships that allow SHIFT to concretely contribute to the efforts of the socially transformative work our partners are leading.

As staff members embark into Year 4 planning, all program areas will be reassessed to operationalize this orientation. Our objective is to find pathways to build on the many relationships SHIFT has developed over the years and to implement new strategies to leverage our impact.

We are excited about this new turn, and we look forward to sharing our 2022-2023 programming with you.

Stay tuned!
