SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation

January 2026

Happy New Year!

As we ease back into things, let’s interrogate urgency. Today, everything is urgent—whether truly, manufactured, or perceived. How do we build community under a constant sense of urgency? While we attempt to create some level of safety and community power, the system that squeezes us persists, one that demands reactivity and segmentation. Even with some of the rafts civil society can offer, we are constantly swimming in this sense of urgency.

The crises and struggles are real, so how do we balance that with democracy, care, slowness and contemplativeness? Socially transformative movements lack capacity, power, and resources; and so many institutions need to change in order to address this scarcity. People with some power who begin to understand what’s at stake will have to share their power and wield their privilege—and do so without the promise of acclaim.

We must gather and embrace conflict, discomfort, and collaboration, increasingly each year. Solidarity is the antidote to urgency, and rather than hope that 2026 will be the year of solidarity, let’s make it so. Because it has to be.

Funding and grants

Since 2019, SHIFT has funded 54 teams & organizations, distributing over $1.1 million. All funding at SHIFT is allocated through a participatory process with our Selection Committees, recruited from Concordia University and our community partners. They are responsible for reviewing, assessing, interviewing applicants, and making final decisions about who receives SHIFT funding. No two Selection Committees are the same, ensuring that SHIFT can continue expanding our network and bringing new perspectives into our decision making.

Capacity Fund

For existing SHIFT funded projects only

This fund supports our partners in hiring consultants, trainers, or organizations that contribute to building capacity, knowledge and sustainability for a team or organization. Eligible teams or groups can receive up to $2500 available per project, per year.

Next deadline: February 11 2026 at 9:00am (final deadline: May 2026)

Ongoing Connections Grant (OCG)

For existing SHIFT funded projects only

Through these grants of $10,000, we recognize the long-term nature of most social change projects and commit to maintaining ongoing supportive relationships with the projects we fund. Our hope is that through sustained engagement we can continue to expand the socially transformative potential of this work while building additional beneficial connections between these projects and Concordia.

Please note that at this point in SHIFT's mandate, we are restructuring some of our programs, including the Ongoing Connections Grant. Instead of an one-year grant, OCG 2026 will be awarding two-year commitments: those partners who are selected in Spring 2026 will be guaranteed two years of funding at $10,000 per year, pending a light evaluation after year one.

This means that we do not anticipate running any more open calls for OCG applications after this year, unless SHIFT secures its own additional funding. We encourage all of our eligible partners to apply, and strongly encourage you to book a meeting to talk about your application.

Read: Community-based internship program supports transformative learning on the ground

The panel at an internship showcase highlighted this program that has funded over 310 student internships at grassroots community organizations across Montreal.

For the last five years, Concordia’s SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation has bridged the gap between academia and grassroots communities by placing more than 350 student interns at 40 different community organizations. That impact is set to grow through a recent merger with an Office of Community Engagement program that focusses on internships with Black and Indigenous-led organizations.

The collaboration, known as the community-based internship program, means Concordia students from every faculty can dive into real-world projects, gain skills, build networks and make a difference in their communities — all before graduation.

The panel at an internship showcase highlighted this program that has funded over 310 student internships at grassroots community organizations across Montreal.
