DECEMBER 3rd: A Dewemaagannag/My Relations workshop with Leïla Afriat
|
This event is hosted by our friends at the Office of Community Engagement.
The McCord Stewart Museum’s exhibition “Wampum, Beads of Diplomacy” explores the fundamental role of wampums as witnesses of agreements between nations, and bearers of cultural and political meaning.
Rather than approaching the exhibition solely through archival research, the museum collaborated closely with Indigenous experts and communities connected to the wampums. This approach ensured the belts and necklaces’ stories were represented authentically and that Indigenous perspectives were centered, not exploited.
Leila Afriat, Community Relations Advisor at McCord Stewart Museum, is joining us for this edition of the Dewemaagannag/My relations workshop to discuss this collaborative journey. She will share insights into the museum’s approach, guided by the 7 values in the Dewemaagannag/My Relations: Indigenous engagement guide.

DECEMBER 5th: Black Visionary Futures : Weaving Systems of Care & Solidarity
|
The Black Healing Centre, in collaboration with the SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation, welcomes Yolo Akili Robinson for "Black Visionary Futures: Weaving Systems of Care and Solidarity".
This 2-day event series aims to inspire participants to lead with intention, build sustainable movements, and create systems that truly support the well-being and empowerment of Black individuals. At both days, we welcome the community to gather and explore innovative approaches to building supportive networks for Black students, wellness practitioners, change-makers, and those who care about Black communal futures.
On Thursday, December 5th, join us at the SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation to hear a conversation between Yolo Akili Robinson (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) and Samanta Nyinawumuntu (Black Healing Centre), as part of SHIFT's "Kinship and Council" event series. This event is open to the public and has free registration.
