The FOFA Gallery at Concordia University, in partnership with SOMA in Mexico City is pleased to welcome Emma Sharpe as curatorial intern thanks to the support of Young Canada Works. This international curatorial internship will bridge two cultural regions through the development of an exhibition that will connect artists from Mexico City to the Montreal cultural community. As curatorial ambassador, Sharpe will begin the internship at SOMA, a non-profit organization conceived to nurture discussion and exchange in the field of contemporary art and education in Mexico City. She will conclude the internship at the FOFA Gallery, working with the research produced during her time in Mexico.

Emma Sharpe is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar based in Toronto. She holds a BFA from NSCAD University (2011) and a MA from Ryerson and York University’s joint Communication & Culture Program (2018). She received a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship to pursue her master’s thesis project "Feeled Recordings," based in the archives of the artist-run centre Art Metropole. She has previously worked as a TA and research assistant at Ryerson University, a communications and archives intern at Art Metropole, and currently sits on the steering committee of the Toronto Art Book Fair and the editorial team of Phile Magazine. Both her work and research aim to bridge the gap between creative practice and scholarship, and focus on themes of tactility and embodiment, printed matter, and collaborative mediation in the visual arts.

This is the second iteration of this project. In 2016, curator Ellen Belshaw travelled to Mexico City and after various encounters and meetings with contemporary artists, returned to Montreal to develop the exhibition What we all knew but couldn’t articulate (September 10 to October 19, 2018.) Supported by Canada Council for the Arts, this exhibition showcases the work of five Mexican contemporary artists, who will create thoughtful and engaging site-specific artworks across the FOFA Gallery’s interior and exterior spaces. The FOFA Gallery and SOMA Mexico are proud to foster these cross-cultural initiatives and support curatorial experimentation in contemporary art.

En partenariat avec l’organisme SOMA de Mexico et grâce au soutien de l’initiative Jeunesse Canada au travail, la Galerie FOFA de l’Université Concordia a le plaisir d’accueillir Emma Sharpe en tant que stagiaire en conservation. L’objectif est de jeter un pont entre deux régions culturelles en élaborant un programme d’expositions qui permettra à des artistes de Mexico de nouer des liens avec la communauté culturelle montréalaise. À titre d’ambassadrice en matière de conservation, Mme Sharpe effectuera la première partie de son stage au SOMA, organisme sans but lucratif fondé pour alimenter la discussion et les échanges dans le domaine de l’art contemporain et de l’éducation à Mexico. Elle le poursuivra ensuite à la Galerie FOFA, où elle mettra à profit les recherches qu’elle aura menées dans la ville latino-américaine.

Artiste multidisciplinaire et chercheuse, Emma Sharpe vit à Toronto. Titulaire depuis 2011 d’un baccalauréat ès beaux-arts du Collège d’art et de design de la Nouvelle-Écosse, elle a obtenu en 2018 une maîtrise ès arts des universités Ryerson et York, dans le cadre du programme conjoint en communication et en culture. Lauréate de la bourse d’études supérieures du Canada Joseph-Armand-Bombardier du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines, elle a intitulé son mémoire de maîtrise Feeled Recordings. Elle a occupé des postes d’assistante d’enseignement et d’adjointe de recherche à l’Université Ryerson et effectué un stage en communication et en archivistique à Art Metropole. Aujourd’hui, elle siège au comité directeur de la Toronto Art Book Fair et fait partie de l’équipe de rédaction du magazine Phile. Dans son art comme dans sa recherche, Mme Sharpe s’efforce de rapprocher les notions de pratique créative et d’érudition. À cette fin, elle privilégie les thèmes de la tactilité et de l’incarnation, de l’imprimé et de la médiation collaborative dans le domaine des arts visuels.

Il s’agit de la deuxième édition du stage international en conservation. En 2016, la commissaire Ellen Belshaw avait séjourné à Mexico, où elle avait découvert et côtoyé des artistes contemporains. De retour à Montréal, Mme Belshaw avait amorcé la conception d’une exposition : Tout ce qu’on savait mais que nous ne pouvions pas exprimer. Appuyée financièrement par le Conseil des arts du Canada, la manifestation artistique se déroulera du 10 septembre au 19 octobre 2018, à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de la Galerie FOFA. Elle sera consacrée aux œuvres contemplatives et fascinantes de cinq artistes contemporains mexicains. La Galerie FOFA et l’organisme SOMA de Mexico soutiennent avec fierté les projets transculturels et l’expérimentation muséale en art contemporain.
