From Concordia to industry: Jennifer Garard on building skills through training |

I completed my Master’s in Environmental Assessment at Concordia, where an internship with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity sparked my interest in how scientists, governments, and communities work together. I later pursued a PhD in Berlin focused on the science-policy-society interface. How did your academic path shape your career? It led me to focus on collaboration across sectors. At Future Earth, I helped build platforms and initiatives that brought diverse perspectives into climate and sustainability discussions. I contributed to international work with the UN Environment Programme and helped launch a think tank on Sustainability in the Digital Age. Throughout my career, strong communication and engagement skills have been essential, helping me connect across disciplines and step into leadership roles. I didn’t develop these skills directly during my graduate studies but instead honed them afterward. Building on that, what opportunities are available right now for students to develop these skills and grow their network? If you’re looking to get involved, start with our upcoming Solve the energy challenge training workshop. It’s a hands-on opportunity to tackle energy challenges, build practical skills and collaborate with peers, with cash prizes to be won. It’s a great way to learn by doing and connect with others in the Volt-Age community. |
