Guy Cormier is our EMBA Class Champion

I’m honoured to announce that Guy Cormier, President and CEO of Desjardins Group, is our EMBA Class Champion for the 2023-2025 cohort. You'll remember that he was our honorary doctorate at the 2022 Spring Convocation.

Guy Cormier was 46 years old when he became the youngest president and CEO in Desjardins history in 2016. He started as a teller and rose through the ranks thanks to his inclusive and effective leadership. As a result of his dedication to equity, diversity and inclusion, Forbes magazine ranks Desjardins as the fourth best employer for women in the world. I know Monsieur Cormier will bring incredible meaning and value to the EMBA program and its 2023-2025 cohort.

Celebrating our success

Speaking of our EMBA, I’m thrilled to share that QS Executive MBA Rankings have placed our EMBA program among the best in the world – again! We ranked 93rd in the world and 38th in North America. In Canada, our program placed fourth (after University of Toronto, Ivey and Queen’s) among nine programs listed. Bravo to the EMBA team!

Academic appointments and renewals

I would like to congratulate the following faculty members who have been newly appointed or re-appointed to the following roles:

Sandra Betton, associate dean, professional graduate programs is renewed for a third mandate of three years. I am very grateful for her leadership and support towards the decanal and executive teams as well as the directors, staff and students of our MBA, diploma and certificate programs. As chair of the Faculty Academic Programs Committee, she has overseen several curriculum changes that she’s successfully defended at the university level. She has also collaborated closely with the CIT and JMEC staff members. I want to thank her for accepting to continue on this journey with me and our colleagues.

Eva Lagou has accepted to continue as director of our CPA program, which keeps attracting more and more students, thanks to her leadership and her team efforts. Rahul Ravi will continue in his role as director of the Executive EMBA, that keeps doing very well in the rankings as indicated above.

Loretta Hung from the Department of Finance is the new director of the JMSB Co-op Program and Experiential Learning. She is replacing Barbara Shapiro who assumed the Co-op program directorship for the last 15 years. Thanks to Barbara’s leadership, the co-op program grew steadily and is a major and distinctive feature of our undergraduate program.

Raul Valverde will continue as the academic Co-op director for the Department of SCBTM, and Alexey Lyubimov from the Department of Accountancy is the new Accountancy academic co-op director, replacing Tara Ramsaran who has been in this role since 2010.

I am grateful to our academic leaders for their work, support and guidance. Their contributions make John Molson one of the best business schools in the world.

Yu-Ping Chen from the Department of Management is the new holder of the RBC Professorship in Work Motivation. Alexandra Dawson has been renewed for the CIBC Distinguished Professorship in Entrepreneurship and Family Business.

Mohsen Farhadloo from the Department of Supply Chain and Business Technology Management is the CURC in Business Analytics for Public Health and Policy (New Scholar Category). Bianca Grohmann from the Department of Marketing is the CURC in Consumer Psychology of Gender (Tier 1). Congratulations to each of them and I wish them fruitful and impactful research outcomes.

New staff members

A warm welcome to Sepideh Eghtedari who joined Career Management Services as the Coordinator for C-RISE (Career Roadmap for International Students Experience) in July.

Departures

On the faculty side, we sadly say goodbye to Steven Applebaum and Kamal Argheyd, both Professors, Management; George Kanaan, Professor, Accountancy; Gregory Lypny, Professor, Finance; and Harold Simpkins, ETA Senior Lecturer, Marketing, who have retired this summer.

Dr. Appelbaum was a former dean and founder of the EMBA and MSc programs and his highly-cited work has been recognized worldwide. Dr. Argheyd served several times as chair of the Department of Management and was the EMBA director as well as the director of the co-op and exchange programs.

Dr. Kanaan served as associate dean, responsible for Undergraduate Programs and Academic and Student Affairs and was also chair of the Department of Accountancy. During his tenure, he led the important efforts to increase enrolment and was a great advisor to the deans who had the privilege of working closely with him, me included.

A repeat recipient of the Distinguished Professor Teaching Award, Dr. Lypny served as acting chair and supervised several students at the graduate level. Prof Simpkins was the academic co-op director for the Department of Marketing for several years, co-developed one of our first online courses, Marketing Yourself, with Dr. Jordan LeBel and was a coach and great supporter of several events like Relève Marketing, Happening Marketing and many others.

John Molson Executive Centre

It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that our colleagues from JMEC (Valerie Lancelot-Mignot, Aliya Ahmed, Stephanie How, and Meline Abraham) will join the team of Professional Education at Concordia University, under the supervision of Isabel Dunnigan.

Current JMEC activities will remain as they are, and hopefully expand by accessing this new entity. We envision that adding our resources to the former Concordia Continuing Education will help our university and our business school increase our impact on the non-for-credit landscape.

They will still be in our building and keep working at improving the brand of John Molson in the executive education world. JMEC offers micro-programs locally and around the world, in different time zones and various industries (e.g. aviation, real estate, sustainability, coaching).

Sandra Betton, associate dean, has been essential in supporting our colleagues over the last three years, on top of overseeing her own portfolio of graduate professional programs. I wish our colleagues from JMEC all much success with this new structure and want to thank them all for their contribution to our community.

Strategic plan update

In May, our revisions to the Strategic Plan were unanimously approved at Faculty Council. You can review the full strategic plan on SharePoint here. We’ve since updated the mission and strategic plan section of our website here. Our goal is to communicate the plan broadly with our community, both internally and externally. Taylor Tower, our communications manager, will be working closely with Barbara Henchey and Guy Barbeau to ensure we’re not only sharing the plan but reporting on its progress. Part of this effort includes an update in every Dean’s Newsletter moving forward.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the revision of our strategic plan. As one of the largest business schools in Canada, we are well positioned to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of our society and the business community.

Closing remarks

I hope you savor the last days of summer and I look forward to a fruitful academic year ahead.

Warmest regards,
Anne-Marie Croteau, PhD, CDir
Dean
