March 2023

Dear colleague,

As the winter winds down and spring nears, I’m filled with hope and pride as we celebrate the successes of our peers as you can read below.

THREE FACULTY MEMBERS RECEIVED THE PRESIDENT’S 2023 MEDIA OUTREACH AWARDS

Our Faculty was well represented and celebrated by Concordia’s University Communications Services during an event held on February 26 where President Carr recognized the media impact of three members of our School. I would like to personally congratulate and thank the following winners for representing John Molson on the world stage so well.

Associate professor in accountancy, Claudine Mangen, wrote regularly in La Conversation about the impact of the pandemic on women’s ability to continue the career progression they had fought so hard for in the past three to four decades.

PhD student Hossein Azarpanah (lead author on a paper about cognitive biases and vaccine hesitancy) and his co-authors, assistant professor Mohsen Farhadloo and professor Rustam Vahidov, all from the SCBTM department, were honoured for the media exposure garnered by their published research. The media coverage grabbed headlines in media outlets across Canada and around the globe. Félicitations !

THREE FACULTY MEMBERS RANKED BY RESEARCH.COM

Every year, research.com ranks the world’s best scientists based on their research publications and citations. This year, I am proud to announce that three John Molson faculty members were recognized globally and nationally.

  • #10 nationally, #189 globally - Michel Laroche, professor in marketing and holder of the Royal Bank Distinguished Professorship in Marketing
  • #46 nationally, #984 globally - Steven H. Appelbaum, professor in management
  • #48 nationally, #1082 globally - Michel Magnan, Distinguished University Research Professor in accountancy and the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Corporate Governance

Congratulations to all of you! Thanks to your research contributions, we are able to celebrate national and global exposure. Chapeau !

ARGUS training workshop

JONATHAN WENER CENTRE FOR REAL ESTATE HOSTED ARGUS CERTIFICATION TRAINING WORKSHOP

From February 28 to March 1, 24 of our undergraduate real estate students attended the ARGUS Certification Training Workshop held by the Jonathan Wener Centre for Real Estate. ARGUS is a software which is used by all major Canadian real estate companies, and knowing how to navigate it will differentiate John Molson students as they enter the workforce.

More significantly, we are the first Canadian University to offer this training. Thank you to Michel Deslauriers for making this workshop happen, and for creating this competitive advantage for our students.

NEW STAFF MEMBERS

Jeremi Harrison-Lalande joined John Molson as Officer, Recruitment and Retention, Undergraduate Programs on February 15, 2023. He fills the big shoes of Cavan Riordan who took on his role on the Graduate recruitment team back in August 2022.

Daisy Chung joined the faculty as Administrative Assistant, Faculty Relations on March 13, 2023, and replaced Selina Leone, who has joined the Math and Stats department at the Faculty of Arts and Science. I’d like to thank Selina for her contributions to our faculty and wish her success in her new role.

I’m pleased to share that Taylor Tower will be taking on the role of Communications Manager at the John Molson School of Business as of April 3. Taylor has been with Concordia since 2018 in the Faculty of Arts and Science where she developed the very first social media strategy for the Faculty, introducing two new platforms — LinkedIn and Instagram — to reach audiences that had yet to be tapped. She also launched and led the rebrand of Réussir en français, Concordia’s French-language learning hub. Please join me in welcoming Taylor and in wishing her success here at John Molson.

I would also like to thank Elena Parial for her support over the past many months. It was a pleasure working with her, a proud alumna of our MBA program, who stepped up to the plate by facilitating our communications efforts at JMSB. John Molson is not the first unit at Concordia to benefit from Elena's communications expertise, and we won't be the last.

COME TO THE CABANE À SUCRE!

It’s the season! Next Tuesday March 21, I’m happy to host the first spring event since 2019. I hope to see you all there. If you haven’t already, please RSVP to JMSB Communications. We all look forward to having great conversations, and a hearty cabane à sucre themed meal. My thanks to Kelly Hall for organizing this fun event.

CLOSING REMARKS

I’m truly happy to hear the buzz around the faculty lounge, thanks to Mr. Bean (😊). It means a lot to each of us to be able to rekindle in a pleasant environment with our colleagues from the academic and administrative community. #WeAreJMSB.

Take care,

Anne-Marie Croteau, PhD, CDir
