Season Recap |
|
It was with renewed excitement that we took the field this past fall, despite missing-out on the previous season’s on-field experience, our student-athletes did not disappoint. View our team roster and photos > The team was resilient. Despite a difficult loss in our first game of the season, we bounced-back and ended the year with a record of 5W-4L-3T. A memorable victory We earned a special 1-0 victory on the road, over the Montréal Carabins, where rookie midfielder Anthony Phelps, scored in the 76th minute of the game! Goalkeeper Jordy Kerlegrand also played a big role in the win as he turned away all six shots on net to earn the shutout. This win was all the more meaningful as Montréal had been undefeated in all six Quebec conference (RSEQ- Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) games leading-up to that point. Furthermore, Montréal had even beat us 6-2 earlier that season. RSEQ Semifinals We ended the season with a fourth-place finish in the strong RSEQ conference. By qualifying for the RSEQ semifinals, we once again had the opportunity to take down the #1 ranked team, the Montréal Carabins. Unfortunately, we came up short with a 2-0 loss that time. Disappointed but proud, our team showed a strong performance against what ultimately became the RSEQ provincial champions. Honours: A best in almost 20 years We had standout performances by our student-athletes this season and it was nice to see them honoured by our provincial conference (RSEQ), our national sports organization (U Sports). It’s worth noting that seven RSEQ awards went to members of our team, a best showing in almost 20 years. Here’s a rundown of our decorated student-athletes. Midfielder Anthony Phelps RSEQ
This is the third time a member of the Stingers team was named the top rookie in Quebec. Previous recipients were Anthony Primiani, BComm 98 (1995) and Grant Needham (1991). U Sports: All-rookie team Phelps is the third member of our team to earn all-rookie honours nationally. Current teammates Simon Spénard-Lapierre (2019) and Simon Malaborsa (2017) are the previous honorees. It is worth noting U Sports added the all-rookie component to its soccer awards in 2017. Forward Mohammad Reza Nafar RSEQ
Nafar was the leading scorer in the provincial conference with seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 12 games. U Sports: Second-team all-Canadian This is the first all-Canadian men’s soccer honour for the Stingers since Andrew Bryan in 2012. Alberto Correa - Forward RSEQ: Second-team all-star Correa was the second-leading scorer with four goals and an assist for five points in 11 games. Defender Sean Holmes RSEQ
A fifth-year senior defender and team captain, Holmes scored one goal in 10 games. Goalkeeper Jordy Kerlegrand RSEQ: All-rookie team Jordy played five games and posted a 3-1-1 win-loss-tie record, including two shutouts. He allowed just four goals on 24 shots and had a goals-against average of 0.80. |
Academic success |
|
As important to our on-field success is our success in the classroom. Two of our student-athletes earned a 3.70 GPA and were named Academic All Canadians.

Forward-looking |
|
We have resumed our winter season and have a slate of great exhibition games lined up, including games against the Première ligue de soccer du Québec (PLSQ) semi-pro teams. This experience will help us continue our growth as a team going into the fall season. Fall 2022 Recruits While we are still recruiting for fall, I am excited to announce that the following student-athletes have already committed to our program. Sebastien Rondeau Sebastien brings with him much soccer experience from playing international games and we look forward to have him join our team. Zackiel Brault A Deux Montagnes native, Zackiel complements our talent and will add quality to our back line. He is a Talented defender who developed in the CF Montreal Academy system. He played with the U18/U19 program for two years, and also spent one year with the U16/U17 team of the CF Montreal Academy. Zackiel will study Finance at the John Molson School of Business. |
Alumni, family and friends engagement |
|
With what we hope is a return to more normalcy in our world these days we are hopeful that we will also be able to engage in person with our alumni, family, and friends of our Soccer Stinger family. We are in the process of planning some initiatives to reconnect in person with all of you and will announce these events in our next newsletter. In the meantime, I would love to hear from you. Please do write to me at concordiasoccer@concordia.ca with your suggestions or comments of what you would like to see. I also want to thank the many of you who have donated to our program over the last year. Every dollar helps in improving our program and allowing us to support our players and give them an experience they can take with them when they graduate. We had a record number of donations on Giving Tuesday 2021 and we hope to break that record again in 2022. We will be updating everyone with another newsletter again this summer when we will share more announcements and our schedule for the 2022 fall season. Until then, stay safe and see you all soon. Best, Greg Sutton |
