SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation

May 2025

If no living system operates in a linear way, then what does it look and feel like to grow? We have a lot in common with plants, which bloom and recede, stretching between comfort and panic, existing imperfectly. Patterns and cycles undulate, break down, are reborn. What questions need to be asked, what needs to be cultivated and invested in for growth? And what needs to be de-grown so that the whole can flourish?

We find meaning most often in the work of relationship-building.

In late spring, we are moving slowly from a moment of growth towards a moment of harvest, a process that is hard to see from the inside. Perhaps it's okay that we don’t quite know what it will look like, so long as we trust in the people around us to figure it out together and to listen not to convince but to understand.

People dancing at the Brique par Brique Monsoon Festival

SHIFT Partner Brique par brique was established in 2016 as a nonprofit organization with the mandate to build enriching, healthy, and accessible living environments in and beyond Parc-Extension. In April 2025, they launched their Community Bonds Campaign, aiming to raise $5 million to fund a new housing project and community space—the Centre for Creative Collective Action—designed to meet the needs of residents in Parc-Extension.

In this SHIFT Journal article, Faiz and Jennifer from Brique par Brique explain the need for affordable social housing, and the importance of community ownership over housing and cultural centres.
