Hello Concordians! I am Afroza and I am part of the Welcome Crew at the Student Success Center. It is my fourth year here at Concordia and what a journey it has been! Born and raised amid the heat and sands of the United Arab Emirates, embracing Montreal winters for university life was quite a change! Having grown up with a diverse mix of people with South Asian, Arab and African heritage while embracing my Bangladeshi roots, I take pride in my mixed cultural identity.
I enjoy reading, and this can go anywhere from novels to full-blown technical manuals! I also engage in writing poetry or reflective essays from time to time, biking and taking long walks when the weather is good. I have a deep-seated love for mountains, the night sky and waterfalls, and find immense comfort in Hindi music from the 1950s and 1960s. Someday, I would love to travel. I feel the most at home on the stage – hosting school events addressing the mass or coordinating events (If I had the time, you'd see me on campus volunteering anywhere and everywhere!)
The one thing I wished I would have known back in my first semester is… how important it is to talk to people around you and get to know your neighbourhood! You get these awesome student-life hacks; it makes life a lot easier. Also, patience is key.
A tip I have for new students is… volunteer and help when you can! The breadth and depth of the kind of people you will meet is phenomenal. You will grow exponentially and also have fun in the process.
My favourite part of being a Concordia student is… the shared sense of community within Concordia and the larger Montreal area. It does not matter where you are from, you will find a place here.
