GPTK763 - Do’s & Don’ts of First Time TAs

Being a Teaching assistant can be a very rewarding experience but it can be a challenging one for students with little or no previous teaching experience. This workshop will look at the challenges students face in their first TAship. Participants will learn about the professional and teaching Dos and Don’ts and they will examine several scenarios and potential causes for common TA challenges, and explore techniques to improve their experience.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Identify common challenges that TAs face and how to overcome these challenges
- Identify the teaching and professional Dos and Don’ts a first-time TAs face, and how to develop the required skills to improve them
- Discuss tips and available resources for TAs at Concordia University

Leaders Information

This workshop will be led by Racha Cheikh-Ibrahim, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry with over 8 years of experience as TA at Concordia University. Racha has worked with GradProSkills and the Center for Teaching and Learning since 2014 in various roles including workshop assistant, outreach coordinator and workshop facilitator.
