GPDI512 - Build your first website using Wordpress

This workshop covers the basic terminology and constructive skills for understanding, building, and maintaining their first website. First, you will understand how to choose a domain name and design a site map. Next, you'll be led through an activity of setting up a account and building a site for a hypothetical conference. During this activity you will be guided through each step, including how to create static pages, how to insert media, and how to link the pages with a menu. You'll explore Wordpress themes and learn how to customize the look and feel of a website using's built-in features. The goal of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the fundamentals of so that one feels comfortable building their own website for future purposes. No HTML or CSS knowledge required.
This workshop will take place in a computer lab.

Learning Objectives

In this workshop you will learn to:

1- Acquire a domain, design a site map, and build a basic Wordpress website
2- Explore themes and tools for customizing a website
3- Apply best practices for web content creation

Leaders Information

This workshop is led by Maya Hey.

Maya Hey is a Vanier scholar (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) and PhD candidate (ABD) in Communication Studies at Concordia University. She is also a Public Scholar with the School of Graduate Studies (2018-2019), aiming to bridge the gap between academic research, industry professionals, and media makers. Her doctoral research examines fermentation and feminist theory, particularly attending to questions of power, performativity, and material practice.
