2019 Summer Program

Concordia International in collaboration with the Department of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics (CMLL) are pleased to offer the Concordia in China Program for Summer 2019. This exciting program provides students the opportunity to participate in an educational and cultural immersion in Beijing while earning 9 Concordia credits.

Program dates & courses

Dates: May 12, 2019 (arrival date) to June 22, 2019 (departure date)

The program consists of 9 credits. Students will be placed into a group according to their proficiency level, and will follow the corresponding courses:

  • MCHI 200: Introduction to Chinese I
  • MCHI 206: Introduction to Chinese II
  • MCHI 240: Intermediate Chinese I
  • MCHI 398: Chinese Culture I
  • GROUP A: MCHI 200 (6 credits) + MCHI 398: Chinese Culture I
  • GROUP B: MCHI 206 (6 credits) + MCHI 398: Chinese Culture I
  • GROUP C: MCHI 240 (6 credits) + MCHI 398: Chinese Culture I

Estimated costs and bursary

Concordia will charge program participants for 9 credits of undergraduate tuition and a program fee of $4335 to cover tuition at the host university, housing (breakfast included), visa, and course materials.

Students are responsible for paying and selecting their transportation to/from Beijing, China, mandatory health and travel insurance, meals and spending money. 

To offset costs, Concordia offers a bursary $2500 to students who qualify. To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Concordia student enrolled in a Concordia Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree program while participating in the program.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 24 credits toward their degree. Graduate students must have completed at least 9 credits towards their degree; these must be credits earned from the current program. Transfer credits, whether internal or external, do not count.
  • Please note that the abovementioned bursary cannot be combined with any other mobility scholarship, mobility bursary or mobility award.  

Eligibility requirements

  • Preference will be given to students who have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA, are registered in Concordia degree programs (Bachelor's, Master's or PhD) and are first-time applicants. Students who have between a 2.50 and 3.00 GPA are eligible to apply.
  • The selection committee reserves the right to interview applicants.

Host institution

The Communication University of China (CUC) is one of China’s key universities. The university is devoted to the cultivation of high-level talent and scientific research in the fields of communication, journalism and new media. CUC ranks among the highest of educational institutions of communication in China and is world-renowned for training Chinese language Newscasters and Television & Radio Announcers.

Accommodations 

Students will be housed in shared rooms in an off-campus, private hotel near the Communication University of China.

  • Tuesday, March 12, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Please note:

  • Admissions decisions will be communicated by e-mail after the application deadline.
  • Students admitted to the program will have to make a non-refundable deposit to Student Accounts (deadline to be announced). Please be aware, however, that any deposit you make will first be applied to any outstanding balances you owe to Concordia.
  • Students admitted to the program will also have to attend a mandatory pre-departure information session (date and time of information session to be determined). 
  • Graduate students and students from other universities must first register as “Independent Undergraduates” to be able to register for these courses. If admitted to the program, you will be prompted to complete this step after your have received your admission letter.
  • The courses offered on this program are subject to change based on final enrolments.
  • Due to the structure and intensive nature of this program, students must be able to take all 9 credits included in the program.
