Dato Abashidze, PhD

Dato Abashidze earned his PhD in 2016 in Psycholinguistics at the CITEC/Department of Linguistics, Bielefeld University, Germany. Before coming to Concordia, Dr. Abashidze held a Research Associate position at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He is currently a Horizon Postdoctoral fellow and his research focuses on language learning and language processing using visual context in different populations of speakers. His specific research interests focus on the contributions of different linguistic, visual and cognitive factors in learning and comprehending spoken language. He employs eye tracking technology to measure eye movements while acquiring new grammatical features or comprehending spoken sentences, in order to examine specific learning/comprehension processes.

Md Shamim Ahamed, PhD

Md Shamim Ahamed earned his PhD. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 2018, where he worked on the thermal environment modeling and optimization of greenhouses in cold regions. Before joining at Concordia, Dr. Ahamed worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Division of Building Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, and worked on the renewable energy-based adsorption cooling system for buildings in the hot and humid climate. He is currently as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Zero Energy Building Studies (CZEBS) at Concordia University. He is currently working on the automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) applied to HVAC systems of institutional buildings.

Fatima Zohra Amara, PhD

Fatima Amara (S’14) received the BSc degree in Telecommunication System from the University of Dr. Moulay Tahar, Saida, Algeria, in 2009, the MSc degree in Telecommunication and Computer from the University of Poitiers, France, in 2012, and her PhD degree in 2018 in Electrical Engineering from the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres (UQTR), Trois-Rivieres, QC, Canada.
She is now a Postdoctoral Fellow in Centre for Zero Energy Building Studies (CZEBS) in Concordia university, QC, Canada. Her research interests are modeling the residential household electricity consumption, forecasting and control of energy consumption.

Interests: Household thermal modeling and residential forecast, Short-Term-Load-Forecasting, Power consumption, Building efficiency, Energy and Building.

Mina Amiri, PhD

Mina Amiri did her PhD in biomedical engineering at McGill University, under the supervision of Prof. Jean Gotman. During her PhD, she mainly focused on analyzing high- frequency oscillations in the EEG signal of epileptic patients. She is now working on ultrasound image processing using deep learning techniques, at Prof. Rivaz lab, Concordia University.

Ritu Arora, PhD

Dr. Ritu Arora is a Horizon postdoctoral fellow in Centre for Research in Molecular Modeling. She holds a PhD degree (University of Delhi, India) in Computational Chemistry on the topic DFT Studies on Some Important Organic Rearrangement Reactions. Her postdoctoral project involves docking, large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanical / molecular mechanical calculations to establish a new mechanistic model for GAPDH inhibition and demonstrate the power of a comparative computational approach in probing biochemical function and drug design.

Tsz King Bjorn Tam, PhD

Bjorn holds a PhD in molecular exercise physiology from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before becoming a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The UT MD Anderson Cancer Center and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. His research focuses on studying how lifestyle intervention improves the functions of adipose tissue and skeletal muscle in human.

Katherine D’Avignon, PhD

Katherine D’Avignon specializes in the modelling and experimental investigation of building thermal energy systems. She holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from Polytechnique Montreal, where she investigated the use of phase change material storage tanks to shift the peak power demand of buildings. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University’s Center for Zero Energy Building Studies (CZEBS). Her research interests lie in increasing the energy flexibility of buildings to improve their resilience to the uncertainties associated with occupant behavior and weather predictions.

Mehdi Dadgarpour, PhD

Mehdi Dadgarpour received the B.Sc. degree from Azad University of Jahrom, Fars, Iran, and the MSc degree from Azad University Science and Research Branch, Tehran, Iran in 2005 and 2009, respectively, both in Telecommunication Engineering, and the PhD degree in Telecommunications from the Energy, Materials and Telecommunications Center of the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS-EMT), University of Quebec, Montreal, QC, Canada, in 2015. He is currently working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University, Montreal, QC, Canada. His current research interests include Metasurface and Metamaterials for beamforming applications, design and analysis of high-gain Millimeter-wave antenna arrays.

Leon Franzen, PhD

Léon Franzen is a trained Neuroscientist (University of Glasgow) who also has a background in corporate management and economics (Zeppelin University). He specialises in perceptual decision making research with adults with dyslexia. Currently, he is exploring new visual marketing tools in the Lab for Sensory Research and Concordia Vision Lab that could facilitate information processing in adults with dyslexia.

Mohsen Ghafouri, PhD

Mohsen Ghafouri received his BSc and Master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2009 and 2011, respectively, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnique Montreal, Montreal, QC, Canada, in 2018. He was a researcher at Iranian Power System Research Institute (NRI) and Sharif University, from 2011 to 2014. In 2018, he was a researcher in CYME International, Eaton Power System Solutions, Montreal, QC, Canada. In August 2018, he joined the Security Research group of Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE), where he is currently a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow. His research interests include cyber security of smart grids, power system modeling, microgrid, wind energy, and control of industrial processes.

Martha Giraldo O'Meara, PhD

Martha obtained her PhD in 2017 in Psychology at Universitat de València, Spain, where she investigated the universality and dimensionality of intrusive-related appearance thoughts. Martha is currently a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow at Dr. Adam Radomsky Lab. Her research interests focus on understanding cognitive mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders in order to enhance current treatment options.

Rodolphe Gonzalès, PhD

Rodolphe Gonzalès is a postdoctoral fellow at Concordia University’s Department of Geography and Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS). After a MSc (Geography, Université de Montréal, 2009) in interactive spatio-temporal visualisation, a PhD(Geography, Université de Montréal, 2016) in network theory, and a postdoctoral fellowship in the same field (University of British Columbia, 2017), his current focus is on developing an online, interactive application to allow the exploration of Rwandan genocide survivors’ life stories. This project builds upon the COHDS’ Stories Matter database as well as Sébastien Caquard’s work on narrative mapping, and aims at providing ways to seamlessly interact between multimedia contents and their representations in space and time. Rodolphe also has an interest in visual, interactive media creation, including video game, animation and film-making.

Hyung-Bae Jeon, PhD

After completed his PhD in molecular ecology at Yeungnam University in 2018, Dr. Hyung-Bae Jeon started his first career as a postdoctoral fellow at Concordia University. He is working on introduced Brook trout to understand how populations evolve during harvesting (also known as ‘fisheries-induced evolution’). This study will contribute to establishing conservation strategies for endangered species as well as sustainable fisheries management.

Ahlad Kumar, PhD

I defended my PhD thesis in 2016 in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. I have a Master’s degree in VLSI from Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, India. My area of expertise is in image restoration, Orthogonal moments and CMOS analog design.

Anne Lafay, PhD

Anne Lafay is a speech-language pathologist with training in neuropsychology. She works with children who present with language development and reading and mathematics learning disabilities (MLD).
Dr. Lafay completed her PhD in Experimental Medicine at Laval University in 2016. Her dissertation related to the functional origin of MLD. Her results addressed the relationship among cognitive deficits in numeracy among Quebec French-speaking 8-and 9-year-old children.
Currently, she is a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mathematics Teaching and Learning Lab (MTLL) in the Department of Education with Helena P. Osana. The main focus of Dr. Lafay’s research is on how children, especially children with MLD, interpret and use external knowledge representations, such as concrete objects (i.e., “manipulatives”), drawings, and standard written notation.

Belinda Lay, PhD

I did my PhD in behavioural neuroscience at the University of New South Wales with R. Fred Westbrook (2013-2017). I am interested in understanding how the brain encodes, processes, and maintain information about cues directly associated with an aversive/appetitive event, and how it rapidly adapts to learning about associated cues.

Artist, activist, community organizer and critical scholar, Vero Leduc is a postdoctoral fellow at the Community + Differential Mobility Cluster, held at the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. Yanjie Liang, PhD

Yanjie Liang obtained his PhD degree in materials science and engineering from Shandong University, China in 2016. As a visiting graduate student, he studied at University of Georgia, USA from 2012 to 2016. His research has focused on the development, in deep study and application of inorganic luminescent materials, with emphasis on near infrared persistent luminescence materials, ceramic phosphors, and upconversion nanoparticles. His recent research interest mainly concern luminescent nanomaterials for optoelectronic and biomedical applications. Due to his outstanding performances during his PhD study, he has received National Scholarship for Graduate Students, State-sponsored Study Abroad Scholarship, Outstanding Graduate of Shandong University, Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of Shandong University, Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of Shandong Province, etc.

Deming Liu, PhD

He did his PhD in nanomaterials engineering in Macquarie University with Prof. Dayong Jin and Prof. Ewa. Goldys (2012-2016). His current project aims at developing a new type of NIR triggered optogenetic tools by applying rare-earth upconversion nanophosphors as light source. His research interests also include heterogeneous nanostructure engineering and nanocrystal surface study.

Danny Mamlok, PhD

Danny Mamlok is a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow under the aegis of Concordia’s Early Childhood and Elementary Education program, the UNESCO Co-Chair in the Prevention of Radicalisation and Violent Extremism, and the federally-funded SOMEONE Project. His main research interests include educational technologies, sociocultural studies in education, philosophy of education, and aesthetic education. In his current research, Dr. Mamlok examines the influences of cultural artifacts (including online and offline materials) on the development of children’s identities.

Ambra Mazzelli, PhD

Dr. Ambra Mazzelli is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University, John Molson School of Business (Montreal, Canada). She holds a PhD in Management from Lancaster University Management School (Lancaster, UK) and received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Management Engineering from University of Bergamo (Bergamo, IT).

Her research interests lie in organization and management theory. Specifically, her research is dedicated to understanding the dynamics of organizational responses to unmet goals and their implications for organizational change in family and non-family firms.

I am calculating carbon budgets for ambitious climate mitigation targets and quantify the uncertainty within these estimates concerning model parameters. During my PhD, I was working towards a fair assessment of Climate Engineering and introduced an indicator selection method, allowing for a comprehensive and comparative assessment of such measures.

Karthik Panchabikesan, PhD

Karthik Panchabikesan is currently working with Dr. Fariborz Haghighat on Energy Efficiency Enhancement in Buildings through data-driven approach. Karthik did his PhD in Anna University, Chennai in the field of PCM based free cooling system integrated with Direct Evaporative cooling unit under the Supervision of Prof. R. Velraj with INSPIRE Fellowship funded by DST, Government of India. Karthik is the recipient of BHAVAN Internship, 2016 awarded by IUSSTF for a period of six months in University of Central Florida (UCF), U.S.A. under the supervision of Dr. Muthusamy V. Swami. During his doctoral research, he also had an opportunity to work under Prof. Yulong Ding, University of Birmingham, UK on Nano-PCM material characterization. His research interests are Energy Efficient Buildings, application of PCM technologies for building energy management, renewable energy systems.

Ryan Scrivens, PhD

Ryan Scrivens is a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University, working with Project SOMEONE to build resilience against hatred and radicalization leading to violent extremism, both on- and offline. Ryan holds a PhD in Criminology from Simon Fraser University. His primary research interests include: right-wing extremism, hate/bias crime, countering violent extremism, and research methods and methodology. Ryan’s work has been covered by an array of national and international media sources, including BBC News, The New York Times, and CBC News. He’s also presented his research before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, and the Swedish Defence Research Agency.

Mari Sild, PhD

Mari Sild (lab of Dr Linda Booij) has a background in genetic engineering (Tallinn Technical University, Estonia), molecular biology of aging (Aarhus University, Denmark) and obtained her neuroscience PhD from McGill University (lab of Dr Ed Ruthazer). Her PhD work focused on visualization of glial-neuronal interactions in the living brain.

Erin Silver, PhD

Erin Silver completed a PhD in Art History and Gender & Women’s Studies at McGill University in 2013. Her dissertation provided a queer feminist historiographical analysis of histories of North American feminist and queer art production, as framed by feminist and queer alternative art institutions and spaces from 1970 to 2012. Silver has curated exhibitions at the FOFA Gallery, the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, and the Doris McCarthy Gallery. She is the co-editor (with Amelia Jones) of a volume entitled Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories (Manchester University Press, 2015), the co-editor (with taisha paggett) of the Winter 2017 issue of C Magazine, "Force," on intersectional feminisms, and the author of the forthcoming Suzy Lake: Life & Work (Art Canada Institute).

Hamid Taghavifar, PhD

Hamid Taghavifar is currently working with Prof. Subhash Rakehja as a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow at Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, CONCAVE Research Center. His Research focuses on analysis of high-load capacity and high-speed frame-steered off-road vehicles. He received his PhD from Urmia University, Iran, and his research interests include vehicle dynamics and control, Terramechanics and energy harvesting from vehicle systems.

István Tóth-Király, PhD

István Tóth-Király is a Horizon Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Substantive-Methodological Synergy Research Laboratory (Department of Psychology, Concordia University). Khaled Touati, PhD

Khaled Touati currently works as a Postdoctoral Associate at the Department of Building, Civil, and Environmental Engineering at Concordia University. He was previously working at the The Department of Systems Engineering and Automatic Control, University of Valladolid, where he obtained his PhD in Industrial Engineering. Khaled’s research is mainly focused on addressing issues facing the energy-water-environment nexus.

Gobinath Vellapalayam Manoharan, PhD

Gobinath obtained his PhD under the supervision of Dr. K. Annamalai in the department of mechanical engineering at VIT University, Chennai Campus, India in 2018. He received his Master of Science (By Research) under the supervision of Dr. A. Rajadurai in the department of Production Engineering at Anna University, Chennai, India. He also holds a patent, few internal journals and MBA degree in Project management. Gobinath having more than 17 years of industry experience including Cummins and Renault Nissan.  He is currently a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow under supervision of Dr. Rolf Wuthrich and research focus is to develop a model-sized “Industry 4.0 smart factory” for mass-personalized high-precision products using hybrid electrochemical advanced manufacturing processes. His research interests include Industry 4.0, Smart Factory, Machine Learning, AI and IoT.
