Listening, Oral History Performance, and Radical Performance Art
This Fellowship aims to involve an emergent artist-researcher in the program of research of the Canada Research Chair in Oral History Performance. Based at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling, a cross-disciplinary and community-oriented research unit, and at the soon-to-be launched Performing Listening Lab, the Fellow will contribute to the development of the concept of “performing listening”, coined by Sotelo-Castro, specifically in the context of performances based on oral history. Making use of the Lab’s state-of-the-art infrastructures, the Fellow will be in charge of developing exercises that facilitate the understanding of listening as an embodied, performative practice within a carefully crafted environment designed for listening. Exercises may include workshops, participatory performance events, and re-examination of previous works by socially-engaged or radical artists. S/he is expected to contribute research-creation methodologies, critical frameworks, and strategies to engage publics for each exercise, in curated contexts. The Fellow will map the creation process, document it, and critically reflect on it through the lens of notions of listening. An in-depth study of listening in the context of oral history performances aims to develop innovative ways of bridging gaps between communities, enabling effective acts of collective remembering, and facilitating reconciliation and social change.
Academic qualifications required
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will have a PhD in Theatre or Performance Studies.
S/he will have an interest in being a participant in these exercises, and will have previously engaged with notions of listening, care, and support in their own practice as an artist and as a scholar. The Fellow will have the necessary abilities to work in community contexts, demonstrated experience working in public spaces, as well as sensibility for identifying cultural specificities.
