Deadline & eligibility

September 28th, 2021 by 8 p.m. is the internal deadline date for applicants currently registered or applicants who attended Concordia University during the calendar year of application. If you were not registered at a Canadian institution at any time during the year of application, you must apply directly to SSHRC by October 17, 2021 by 8:00 p.m. Please refer to the tri-agency flowchart to determine the appropriate application path.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, as of the application deadline date;

  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from

  • the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) or SSHRC (the agencies);
  • submit only one scholarship or fellowship application in a given academic year to either SSHRC, CIHR or NSERC. Nominations to

  • the Vanier CGS program do not count toward this limit
  • (See SSHRC’s regulations on multiple applications and holding multiple awards for more information); and
  • have completed no more than 48 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application. (SSHRC D)

  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the year of application (no more than 36 months if transferred directly from Bachelors to a PhD or enrolled in a joint program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD). (CGS D).

Eligibility of Subject Matter at SSHRC: Applicants should apply to the agency that is best aligned with their research subject matter to ensure that it is reviewed by experts in disciplines closest to their field(s) of study. Applicants who are uncertain should consult the guidelines for selecting the appropriate federal granting agency.

Note: Applicants submit one application for both award types. Applicants eligible for both the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and CGS D Scholarships will automatically be considered for both awards. Top-ranked applicants eligible for a CGS D will automatically be offered the CGS award first. As each award has notable differences, applicants must read the descriptions for each award carefully to determine if they are eligible to apply and hold each award.
