Doctoral Research Award: Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate (CGS D)

$35,000/year (up to 3 years)

  • Stipend: $30,000 per annum
  • Research Allowance: $5,000 per annum

Deadline & eligibility

October 8, 2021 by 8 p.m. is the internal deadline for applicants registered at Concordia University within the calendar year of application. If you were not registered at a Canadian institution at any time during the year of application, you must apply directly to CIHR by October 17, 2021 by 8:00 p.m. Please refer to the tri-agency flowchart to determine the appropriate application path.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, as of the application deadline date;

  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the year of application (no more than 36 months if transferred directly from Bachelors to a PhD or enrolled in a joint program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD);

  • Applicants can submit a maximum of one scholarship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. Nominations to the Vanier CGS program and applications to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program do not count towards this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships).

  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.

  • For the purpose of this application, the Nominated Principal Applicant must be a Trainee at the time of application.

  • The Nominated Principal Applicant must not hold an open-ended academic position in which the holder can form a research group, apply for external funded research as a principal investigator, and also teach.

Eligibility of Subject Matter at CIHR: Applicants should apply to the agency that is best aligned with their research subject matter to ensure that it is reviewed by experts in disciplines closest to their field(s) of study. Applicants who are uncertain should consult the guidelines for selecting the appropriate federal granting agency.

How to apply

  1. Applicant requests official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate):
    1. Transcripts should be requested as early as possible in order to meet the agency deadline date (e.g. at least 2 weeks before any hard deadline).
      Official transcripts can be picked up in person at the Birks Student Service Center (LB 185) or they can be mailed or sent by courier to students in sealed envelopes.

    2. Translated copies of transcripts written in a language other than English or French must be submitted with a certification/validation using electronic signature or an email provided by the translator. Any validations/certifications must be uploaded to the electronic application with the transcripts;
    3. For your letter of attestation to confirm Part-time Study and/or Leave of Absence, you will need to order them online.
  2. Fill out an online application form by October 8th, 2021 by 8 p.m.
  3. Identify two sponsors: Applicant must enter the sponsors' names within their application. The sponsors will receive a request via email from ResearchNet to complete an assessment form.

Eligible applicants wishing to apply through Concordia University must submit an online application using ResearchNet by October 8th, 2021 by 8  p.m.

Post award information

To activate payment, (1) complete the Confirmation of Commencement form on ResearchNet and submit a signed copy to the program contact (2) Concordia-based payment activation form along with your (3) CIHR Authorization for Funding must be submitted to the Graduate Awards Office. Your award will be processed and released into your Student Account after the DNE deadline of every term. Click on Request a refund on your Student Centre to receive a cheque to your mailing address for any remaining funds.
