Tips for Winter Running

Just because it's getting colder, it doesn't mean you can't exercise outside anymore.

As winter approaches, if you are keen on jogging outdoors during the colder months, here are some tips to make outdoor running safer and more enjoyable:

  • Wear multiple layers – up to 5 layers to stay warm. This gives you the option to remove some of them as you get hotter during exercise
  • Wear a fabric mask or pull a neck warmer up to cover the mouth and nose, in order to warm up the air you breath in a little more before it reaches your lungs
  • Take shorter, shuffling strides to account for slippery surfaces, particularly when going down slope or when you need to take more sudden, abrupt steps of braking and change in directions

If you are a recreational runner and have some running-related questions on topics such as muscle activations or choosingof running footwear, check out the webinar held by PERFORM's Athletic Therapy team "Running for Beginners".
