Brief Bio 2021

Dr. Moselhi is Professor and Director of the Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Engineering and Management (CICIEM), Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Concordia University.  He served as Chair of the department and Executive Advisor to the Dean in graduate studies and research. He has over 40years of professional and academic experience. His industry experience spans tall buildings, bridges, nuclear power plants, harbor and offshore facilities.  He is a Fellow of the Association for Advancement in Cost Engineering (AACE International), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE),and of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). Dr. Moselhi supervised and co-supervised over 100 Masters and Ph.D. graduates, authored and co-authored over 400 scientific publications. He served as international consultant on academic affairs and on construction projects in Canada, USA and the Middle East. Dr. Moselhi is a recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the Walter Shanly Award of CSCE in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the development and practice of construction engineering in Canada” and the Tucker-Hasegawa Award of the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC) in recognition of his “major and sustained contribution to the field of Automation and Robotics in Construction”.

    Many of my former students have taken leadership positions in industry and in academia. In industry, for example, 2 are Vice Presidents (V.P.) at SNC-Laval in Montreal, V.P. International- Hydro Québec, V.P. Engineering and Construction, Aero Port de Montréal. In academia, as well, many of my former graduates hold faculty positions ranging from Assistant Professors to Full Professors at the University of Alberta, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Calgary in Canada, the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, California State University Long Beach, the University of Wisconsin, California State University-Sacramento and     California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo in the USA, and other universities in the Middle East and the Far East, including Cairo University, the American University in Cairo and Ain Shams University in Egypt, King Fahad University, Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University and  Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, in KSA, the American University in Dubai in UAE, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi in Tailand. Research activities

Research interest

Automation in construction and in asset management of civil infrastructure.

(1)   Automation in construction

In this area we employ selection of digital imaging, 3D laser scanning, remotesensing, RFID, UWB, AI, spatial and web-enabling technologies as well as BIM, computersimulation and optimization methods for:

-       Automatedlocalization, detection and classification of resources on construction jobsites for monitoring, racking and progress reporting of construction operations,

-       Optimizedplanning and automated productivity assessment and tracking of largeearthmoving operations,

-       Quantitativemodeling of Change orders and weather impact on productivity,

-       Materialmanagement,

-       Decisionsupport systems for risk management, selection of most suitable projectdelivery method(s) and value engineering,

-       Optimizedplanning and scheduling for repetitive and no repetitive construction projects,considering uncertainty, resource allocation, and schedule compression needs.

 

(2) ((2) Optimized value driven assetmanagement for sustainable and resilient civil infrastructure

In this area we employ selected clusters of digital imaging, infrared,ground penetrating radar, 3D laser scanning, maintenance records, remote sensingtechnologies, GIS, GPS, AI including ANN and machine learning, web-enabling technologies,data fusion as well as optimization methods and computer simulation including discrete-event,agent-based  and system dynamics for:

-       Optimizedselection of risk-based and value-driven inspection strategies,

-       Automatednon-invasive and non-destructive condition assessment and rating, conditionmonitoring, detection and classification of defects,

-       Deteriorationmodeling and condition forecasting,

-       Resiliencemodeling and multi-attributed selection and optimization of recovery strategies,

-       Optimizedasset management to support targeted levels of service, sustainability and resilienceof civil infrastructure assets.
