Make some noise!

It’s a big weekend for varsity sports at Concordia. Check out our roundup of crucial games happening today, tomorrow and Sunday. Then grab your noisemakers, and get out to the stadium to cheer on your Stingers student athletes!

Football

This Saturday, October 1, at 2 p.m. Concordia will face Bishop’s University in the 30th annual Shrine Bowl. Since its inception, the fundraiser has collected $942,000 for the Shriners Hospital for Children. That's almost a million bucks!

This week, Stingers head coach Mickey Donovan took six of his players to the hospital to visit some of the young patients. Members of the Gaiters also went along.

The afternoon matchup against the last-place side from Lennoxville is a golden opportunity for Concordia to improve upon its 2-2 record and make a run for the playoffs.

The Stingers’ star quarterback Trenton Miller leads the conference with 1,223 passing yards.

Men’s soccer

Sitting in third place in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), Concordia will look to jump up the standings tonight (Friday, September 30) at 6:30 p.m. when they face second-place Université de Laval at the Concordia Stadium.

Keep an eye out for rookie Sebastien Boucley who has five points in as many games.

Women’s soccer

The Stingers will have their work cut out for them tonight (Friday, September 30) when they face the undefeated Laval Rouge et Or at 8:30 p.m. during the Erica Cadieux Memorial. Ever year, the Concordia women's soccer team plays a match to honour Cadieux, a former Stinger who died tragically in 2006.

She is survived by her husband Carlo Spadafora, daughters Bianca and Olivia, parents Roch and Yolanda Cadieux and sisters Sophie and Nini. Small gifts will be collected for the Montreal Children’s Hospital's Child Life Services Department.

The Concordia women have managed a win and a tie over five games, good enough for sixth place in the RSEQ standings. Second-year midfielder Laura Lamontagne is one to watch, having earned two goals and two assists so far this season.

Men’s rugby

Fear the beard! The Concordia men’s rugby team is hosting Université de Montréal at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 2. The Carabins are unbeaten in three games so far this season, so the 1-2 Stingers are in for a tough battle.

On the road: women’s rugby

The women’s rugby team is traveling to Ottawa this weekend to face the Carleton University Ravens, who are in third place, one spot ahead of the Stingers in the RSEQ standings.

Bonus track

Concordia’s baseball team is playing a double-header against the University of Ottawa beginning at noon on Saturday, October 1, at Gary Carter Park in Cote-St-Luc..

The women’s hockey team is playing a pre-season friendly against Montreal pros Les Canadiennes. Stingers head coach Julie Chu, and assistants Caroline Ouellette and Lauriane Rougeau are all active members of the team — and Olympic medalists.

Will they play? Find out when the puck drops tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Ed Meagher Arena.

The men’s basketball team will face Queen University in a non-conference pre-season game at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
