April 2022

Dear colleagues,

As we head into the end of the semester, I wanted to take a few moments to celebrate a few key milestones from the past term.

AACSB – Peer Review Team visit

On April 4th and 5th, we welcomed the AACSB’s Peer Review Team (PRT), which consisted of Dean Joseph Doucet, from the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Alberta, Dean Andrew Gaudes, from the Goodman School of Business at Brock University, and Hofstra University’s Interim Provost, Janet A. Lenaghan. Many John Molson community members met with them during their visit, to elaborate on various aspects of the AACSB Continuous Improvement Report we submitted. This whole accreditation process is the result of five years of hard work. I would like to thank each of you who attended the meetings. Special thanks go to the members of Office of Accreditation and Faculty Relations, especially associate dean Alexandra Panaccio, Angela Usas, Umit Aykut, as well as Meral Büyükkurt who was director of accreditation a few years ago, and members of my office, Barbara Henchey and Padraig Mclean. The next steps are for the PRT to provide their report to the AACSB Continuous Improvement Review Committee, which will make its recommendation to the Board at the end of June 2022.

Case competition season

Year after year, it never gets old celebrating just how stellar our case competition programs are! With another landmark year under our belt for both the MBA CCC and the JMCC, I want to thank Tim Field and Nora Baronian for their commitment to the case competition programs and congratulate them and the students for an outstanding year.

For the 2021 calendar year, the John Molson Competition Committee demonstrated the dedication and resilience of our students. Students needed to adapt to an online format and to constantly changing demands. We shifted to a completely virtual recruitment approach, which totaled 100 hours of tryouts, to form a delegation of 160 students. JMCC also benefited from the support of 104 coaches, 20 executives and 2200+ volunteer hours.

COVID-19 had required the MBA CCC to upheave its operations and processes from previous years. The aim for 2021 was to extend a feeling of community to the rest of the MBA program while maintaining the case competition culture. To achieve this, the MBA CCC focused on maintaining its high level of participation, adapted its learning platforms to virtual environments, found new events to attend, offered more small group personalized sessions and new ways to support our students.

Bravo Nora and Tim, for consistently fostering an engaging and exciting experiential learning opportunity for our students!

In Memoriam

Dennis Kira

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of long-time John Molson faculty member Dennis Kira. Dennis held many roles at John Molson since joining the faculty in 1983, stepping up to support the faculty during important leadership changes. He served as acting MBA director, chair of SCBTM, and supervised many PhD theses.

The family will be receiving condolences on Thursday April 14, at 3:00pm at the Centre Funéraire Cote-des-Neiges, 4525 chemin de la Cote-des-Neiges.

I wish everyone a good end of semester. Be well and take care.
