The John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition (JMUCC) — the largest of its kind in the world — begins on February 19.

Entirely run by students from the John Molson School of Business (JMSB), the event will welcome 96 competitors representing 24 schools from 12 countries.

Solène Tanguay has been involved with the competition since starting her commerce degree in 2014. She is now president of the organizing team.

“Every year I am extremely impressed and inspired by the professionalism, breath-taking presentation skills and innovative ideas of the students who compete," she says.

JMUCC is regarded as one of the best on the case competition circuit. Tanguay attributes this to its focus on real business situations.

“Our cases are all live. They are brought forth by actual companies that have real decisions to make.”

The competition’s 10 student organizers are responsible for every aspect of the event, including logistics and corporate sponsorship. They are supported by 53 volunteers as well as 90 judges from the business community.

A new bursary

This year, the organizers have introduced the JMUCC School Bursary, created for teams who cannot otherwise afford to attend.

“We are extremely proud of this initiative,” Tanguay says.

This year’s recipient is the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh.

“JMUCC is a real opportunity to embrace the diversity of our large business world, to network with inspiring industry professionals and to build life-long relationships with people from each corner of the world.”

In addition to hosting, JMSB also has its own team, coached by Mark Haber, Dan Silverman, Christian Bonneau and Annabel Egan.

Undergraduates Cédric Beaudoin, Stephanie Chabot, Catherine Trudeau and Christophe Guimond-Drapeau will be looking to continue the school’s great run this season by adding to the trophy case.

More competitions!

JMUCC is one of four major case competitions hosted by JMSB.

The MBA International Case Competition ran during the first week of January.

In its fourth year, the Engineering and Commerce Case Competition (ECCC) unites engineering and business undergraduate students to fuel new ideas. The 2017 competition takes place February 28 to March 4.

Finally, the Van Berkom JMSB Small-Cap Case Competition focuses on small-cap investment and is open to both undergrad and graduate students. It’s coming up on March 24 and 25.

All case competitions are open to the public and free to attend.

The entire
John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition will be broadcast online. Watch it live!
