This posting represents a full-time temporary replacement for 8 months.


Reporting to the Technical Officer, the incumbent ensures the smooth and safe operation of teaching laboratories for the Department of Biology in the areas of animal physiology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, ecology and plant biology. They also provide technical support in the maintenance of equipment used in teaching and in common research facilities, and performs other duties in support of the unit.

Primary responsibilities

  • Responsible for the quality and preparedness of teaching laboratories; manage the set-up and disassembly of the laboratory including all equipment and supplies required for teaching labs in the areas of general biology
  • Order supplies for assigned laboratories and ensure all materials are ready when required.
  • Ensure students follow proper laboratory procedures; instruct individuals on the use of various scientific equipment.
  • Maintain up-to-date preparation notes.
  • Ensure equipment readiness in teaching laboratories and common research facilities.
  • Perform duties and maintain facilities according to University health and safety protocols and standards.
  • Participate in the revision of laboratory manuals; optimize and implement laboratory protocols associated with the course and recommend changes when needed.
  • Work with fellow technicians during peak times such as lab exam set-ups.
  • Handle and euthanize (including decapitation followed by pithing) laboratory animals.
  • Perform other duties in support of the operations of the unit.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a relevant discipline and at least two (2) years of associated experience OR Professional DEC and four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with spirometers and oxygen meters desirable
  • Superior knowledge of animal physiology, invertebrate biology, vertebrate biology, and ecology
  • Working knowledge of microscopy (light and dissecting microscopes),and vertebrate anatomy (example: human, frog, trout)
  • Experience handling and euthanizing vertebrate animals; ability to perform dissections in front of students.
  • Experience with equipment used to measure and record nerve impulses and muscle contraction (amplifiers, transducers, oscilloscopes, etc.).
  • Good technical knowledge and equipment maintenance skills capable of troubleshooting, performing routine maintenance, and conducting minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
  • Good knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations including WHMIS.
  • Superior organizational skills in order to effectively organize work and set priorities under time constraints.
  • Knowledge of PhysioEx and Lab Chart software desirable.
  • Good knowledge (Intermediate Level) of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English in order to instruct and to write experimental procedures and instructions; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French in order to answer routine questions; written French an asset.
  • Have physical ability to lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and with assistance over 45 kg (100 lbs.)
  • Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the university’s Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Ability to work evenings or the occasional weekend for laboratory courses and special events.


$28.25 - $42.47 per hour
